Chapter One

Will

“Melanie,” I gasp, waking up covered in a cold sweat and shooting straight up in my bed. I feel around in the darkness, but I’m all alone. It was just a dream—a painfully erotic dream about my long-time friend who has captivated me far longer than I care to admit. The sun isn’t even up yet, so I take off my tee shirt, swipe the sweat off my face and chest, and lie back down.

My heart’s going to pop out of my chest, and I know it.

There is a damn complicated yet perfectly explainable reason for this bullshit, and her name is Melanie Brandon. She is my little raven, with eyes that I could drown in and a smile that captures my fantasies.

Fuck, it’s hot in the Texas summer heat, but that’s not the reason why I’m burning up. Melanie has me on fire, aching for her with a lust that’s undeniable. She’s three years younger than me, and yet it feels like we’re a million years apart. I have to wait one more year before I can make her mine, and I will, but the time apart has been endless. The long, lonely nights have become longer.

My dad was right, and it finally hits me. “Finally” isn’t the right word because it hit me too soon. Way too damn soon. I’ve got a long way to go before I can make her mine.

Fuck, I’m in trouble. This road has been a long one, longer than anything I’ve come across so far, and it’s not over yet. My dad thought he had it bad when he fell in love with my mom, but it was nothing compared to my love for Melanie.

I jumped out of bed and hit the floor, palms flat, toes pointed down and stomach on the ground. “One,” I grunt. “Two.” The push-ups drive me on until I’ve done a hundred and collapse on the floor. My arms burn, body dripping with more sweat.

At least my hard-on has faded, and my arms are too sore to beat my cock to death. It’s the only thing keeping the fucker from being completely raw. I’d stroked it to numbness while I was away at college. Being back home for summer break isn’t any better, but work and friends make it a little easier to deal with seeing Melanie even in passing.

Scrambling back onto my feet, I hit the pull-up bar next. I work out for the next two hours, getting my body primed and ready before I go to see the love of my life today.

I pop in the shower to wash off all the grime and then step out to shave. It takes another twenty minutes before I’m dressed in a pair of jeans and a plain white tee. The sun is going to be baking outside today, but I’ll be on my ride, so I prefer my jeans. Stopping in my small kitchen, I scarf down some breakfast.

I’m almost outside my front door when my cell rings. Pulling it out my pocket, I answer it just before it goes to voicemail. “What’s up, Pops?”

“Just calling to check on you.” I wonder what else is on his mind. We see each other every single day and I work with him for ten damn hours.

“I’m just heading out on my way over to the clubhouse. In fact, I’m riding my new motorcycle there.

“Cool. Tell me how it is.” It was a gift for my birthday, and I haven’t had a chance to truly enjoy it since I went back to school, so this will be my opportunity.

“I will.”

“You’re going to behave today, right?” he asks. I knew there had to be a reason for this call.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Melanie’s going to be here, and…she’s not quite an adult.”

“I know, Pops. Trust me. I haven’t forgotten.” Today, I’ll let her know that she has a year to prepare for her future. I have no plans to stop her from fulfilling her dreams of becoming a librarian like her mother was, but that doesn’t mean that our future won’t begin when she turns eighteen, which unfortunately isn’t until next summer. A whole brutal year away.

“She’ll probably be dressed up and there will be other guys who are not related.”

“They know where I stand, so I expect them to act accordingly and then so will I. Trust me when I say that I have learned to control my jealousy. I trust my cousins to look after her.”

“Okay. I’ll see you later.” I end the call and tuck my phone away before hopping on my bike and revving it up.

Driving onto the main road, I take a long ride, passing by Melanie’s home. I don’t know what I expected to happen, but no one is outside because they’re either getting ready or already there, so I ride to the party.
