“I can spare a few minutes to thank you for this spectacular masterpiece of a ring.” She held her hand out and turned it this way and that in admiration. Celia has never been the girly type, but the beauty of the ring had her little girl’s heart-melting. Eileen rolled her eyes at the two lovebirds when she walked back into the room moments later to top off their now cold coffee.

Ryan smacked his lips again upon awakening, trying to erase the weird taste in his mouth. He didn’t know what it was, but every once in a while in the last couple of years, he’d wake up with this odd taste in his mouth and his breath smelling like horse manure. He knew that vodka sometimes had that effect, but this was happening even when he hadn’t been drinking.

He scratched his chest as he got up from the bed and made his way down the hallway to the bathroom. His dick was still covered in dried pussy juice though he could hardly remember the night before. That too is something that has been happening more and more of late.

He took a quick shower and saw by his watch that he had time for more than a hurried cup of coffee, so headed downstairs to the scent of bacon and eggs cooking. His stomach growled in appreciation, and he was even more appreciative of the cup of coffee his wife passed for him before he sat down a the kitchen table.

As he watched her move around the table, he remembered vaguely that he wanted to talk to her about something the night before. It all came back to him by his third sip, and since Connie hadn’t yet come down for breakfast, he thought that now was as good a time as any.

He didn’t know why, but lately, outside of bed, he found himself wondering just what it was that he’d seen in Misty that had made him ask her to marry him. On days like this, he was barely attracted to her, and the fact that she had a kid should’ve been a deal-breaker. Oh yeah, there’s the fact that she’s amazing in bed. Though sometimes, he can’t even recall how or why he thinks that.

He followed that train of thought right back around to what it was he’d wanted to discuss with her the night before. It felt like he was beating a dead horse, but it needed to be said. If he didn’t nip the shit in the bud right now, things might only get stickier in the future, and though he wasn’t willing to be Connie’s father, he didn’t necessarily want to hurt the kid’s feelings.

He was a little peeved at Misty since this is something she’d known from the start, so he didn’t feel any way about bringing it up to her once again. “Hey, I meant to talk to you last night, but somehow it slipped my mind.”

“That’s because of all the fun we were having.” Misty smiled and brought the carafe over to the table to warm his coffee.

“More?” She asked while Ryan held the cup away. “Not right now! You really need to talk to her about calling me dad, you know how I feel about that, and I don’t want to give her the wrong impression. You know how I feel about kids; I don’t want that kind of attachment, and none of the responsibility of being a dad; we’ve talked about this.”

“But you’re so good with the kids at school, everyone says.”

“Yes, but I’m their teacher, not their parent; that’s two completely different things. Look, the bottom line is, I don’t want her calling me dad.” Ryan thought he heard an indrawn breath, but when he looked towards the sound, there was no one there, and Misty didn’t seem to notice, so he felt safe to carry on with their conversation.

Misty kept trying to force more coffee on him, but Ryan was over it already since she didn’t seem to be listening to his complaint. He didn’t even touch the breakfast she put in front of him; he just got up and left to go to work. The school bus would be here to pick Connie up in another half an hour, and though he’d been driving her since the pandemic, today he decided to forego that, thinking that maybe this new closeness had given the kid the wrong idea and it was maybe time to pull back.

Ryan isn’t a cold-hearted bastard. He has his own reasons for not wanting kids of his own and not wanting the responsibility at all. It may seem odd that he’d chosen the profession he had, working closely with kids, but he saw the two as entirely different and not at all the same.

The more he thought of it as he drove the familiar road to the high school, the stranger it seemed. Until he’d been gone for those two weeks, he never gave much thought to his current situation, but lately, just in the last couple of days to be exact, he’s been wondering more and more just what the hell he was doing married to a woman he barely found passable and with a daughter to boot.
