Thank God for small miracles. There was no telling what would’ve happened had she come in through the garage without Body to protect her.

“She came home with us. She’s on our couch,” Will answered.

I blew out a shaky breath. One that tasted of bile and bad decisions.

“I hate them all,” I said with a growl.

Neither Sophia nor Will had to know who ‘them’ were.

They knew.

The human traffickers, and O’Ryan, the man that bought my sister.

The one that had been responsible for her panic attacks and forcibly holding her for a year.

The woman at my back, realizing where my mind was at, squeezed into me tight, reminding me that she was there.

“We’ll deal with anything related to this,” he swept his hand at the room to encompass the mess, “in the morning. But I don’t see there being any problems. Especially since I know you’ll get footage to us and we’ll know everything.”

Years ago, I’d gotten a security system to marvel all security systems.

It’d served dual purposes.

One, to monitor Traci’s antics because she got pissed easily and liked to do stupid shit to me, like forking my yard—yes, I said forking. That meant that she stuck plastic forks into my yard and then broke them off at the base, making it to where they were big enough to get hit by my lawn mower, but small enough to go unnoticed by anything else.

Though, when Clem had stepped on one as she’d raced across the yard to give me a hug one day when she was leaving causing one to penetrate her foot two inches, I’d had enough.

Hence the security system.

And, also, it made it to where I knew my girls were safe. But there was one flaw in my plan.

The entry to the garage from the house.

I’d have to definitely have that hooked back up to the security system, because no fuckin’ way was it happening again.

“If you go talk to that piece of shit,” my voice all growly and pissed off. “Find out how the fuck he got into my garage. I’d like to plug that particular leak.”

Will gave a chin jerk and said, “I’ll get that done for you. Do you need the number of the crew that does the department’s cleanups?”

“No.” I got pissed all over again looking at the fucking mess in the living room. “Price can do it.”

Price, my brother, owned a company that specialized in clean ups of all kinds.

There was blood literally everywhere. On the walls. The couch cushions. The fucking kitchen counter.

The ceiling.

The thought of Sophia’s pretty face being hurt today set my blood on fire.

“I want him arrested and charged,” I growled.

One of the cops, the snarky one that I hadn’t realized had come back inside until now, butted in.

The cop, who was now staring at Sophia’s body against mine, smirked. “Oh, it’s happening, man. Don’t worry. You want me to call Madden?”

Did I want him to call Madden and take her out from under my roof when I had her where I wanted?

Of course, I didn’t want that.

But it was the right thing to do…

“Madden’s at training in Marble Falls,” Will said. “Half the area SWAT team is.”

CHAPTER 5

Will there be snacks?

SOPHIA

I’d never been so happy in my life.

Not that I didn’t love my father, but who the hell would allow this perfect scenario to pass by?

“I thought you left?” Will barked.

The cop held up his hands. “Just wanted to see if he knew his truck was still running.”

Will rolled his eyes. “Go.”

The cop went.

“New guy?” the man in front of me rumbled.

I was still leaning up against his back. The feeling of him pressed up against me made me feel so warm and comfortable.

I wanted to move into the space that surrounded him permanently.

In my twenty-two years of life, I’d never, not ever, been in this position. Or the one I’d been in earlier when I’d hit him like a wrecking ball, and he’d caught me. Despite my worries and the fact that I might’ve been in partial shock, I’d still been very much aware of where his hands had been.

How close his hands had been to certain parts of my anatomy.

“Yeah, new to the department and policing in general. Wants to help, I know, but man, the guy needs to get on some Adderall or something. He’s so fuckin’ bouncy. And he wants to help, but he’s like a little kid and gets in the fuckin’ way. I’m not sure whether he’s going to be a good cop or not yet. I’m leaning toward not seeing as he’s so fuckin’ unhelpful and annoying.” Will pulled his keys out of his pocket. “Meet me out on the porch and I’ll bring you back your keys.”

With that, Will, my best friend’s newest uncle, and a man that could give Henry Cavill a run for his money, left. Leaving me still pressed to my best friend’s dad’s back.
