The elevator dings its arrival to Mack’s floor, and I send Anna one last text message, purposely choosing not to hold back the truth.

Me: Don’t send the Edible Arrangement until tomorrow afternoon. I don’t plan on going home tonight, and I don’t want the fruit to go bad.

Anna: Oh my God. You two are officially enemies turned best-frenemies-that-are-fucking! It’s a whole situationship. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.

As I step out of the elevator, my phone pings again, then two more times, but I shove it into my purse on a laugh. Clearly, Anna is losing her shit, but I have more important matters to attend to.

Hot sex with Mack for as long as the two of us can handle.

My heels tap against the hardwood floor in a sexy way I’ve only heard in movies, and I feel emboldened as I walk down the small hallway toward his apartment. I’ve never been this kind of woman—the kind of woman who takes what she wants and doesn’t apologize for it—but maybe now I am.

I come to a stop in front of his door and give myself a moment to take a cleansing breath before I lift my hand to knock three times against the wood.

Mack opens it a few moments later, and he looks so damn sexy in his white T-shirt, jeans, and bare feet that I put my money where my horny mouth is and unbutton my jacket before we even say hello.

“Hey, Katy Cat. I tried to text you—” he starts to greet, but I cut him off by flinging open my coat so he can see what lies beneath.

“I hope I’m not overdressed,” I whisper in my most seductive voice, and his eyes go so wide, I fear they might pop right out of the sockets.

“Shit,” he yelps, slamming the door closed behind him and shoving me back so he can step into the hallway with me. It’s definitely not the reaction I expected, but I don’t even have any time to think about it.

“Uncle Mackie, I want pizza!” a tiny child’s voice calls through the now-closed door.

“Gracie, what have I told you about being so bossy?” a louder, more adult voice responds from somewhere in his apartment, and it’s my turn for my eyes to bug out of my dang head.

“Who’s there, Uncle Mackie?” The little voice is closer now.

“Shit,” Mack says again, slamming my coat closed and wrapping his strong arms around me just as the door cracks open behind him.

“Y-you’re not alone?” I stutter, his full-on bear hold so tight, I can’t even move my arms.

He leans his head back ever so slightly to meet my eyes and whispers, “I tried to text you. I forgot I agreed to watch my niece tonight until they just showed up five minutes ago.”

“Who is it, Uncle Mackie?” the little voice asks from right behind him now. Fairly certain I’m covered, I shove Mack back enough to get a look at the source—the absolute cutest little girl I’ve ever seen. She has brown pigtails and big brown eyes, and she’s staring at us with the curiosity of that monkey George.

“Gracie, this is my friend Katy,” Mack says without stepping fully out from in between us. “Can you go back into the living room for a second? We’ll be in in just a minute.”

“Why?”

Mack’s chuckle vibrates through his chest. “Because I have to tell Katy a secret.”

“But I love secrets!” Her eyes meet mine. “And I’m really good at keeping them, Katy! Promise!”

Oh my God.

“Gracie?” someone calls from behind her, but it’s not long before they’re standing right beside the little girl. “Oh,” the very pretty woman I’m deducing is Lizzy says after one look at my heels and coat. It’s clichéd enough that she recognizes the situation for what it is. “Hello…”

Oh my God.

Mack’s sister totally knows I’m naked right now, and we’ve never even met before.

Could this be any more awkward? Chandler Bing would think not.

My heart is pounding wildly in my chest right now, and I’m certain my cheeks are the shade of Taylor Swift’s red lipstick.

“So…Katy…” Mack sighs in defeat. “This is my sister, Lizzy.”

“Hi…” I pause, clear my throat, and try to ignore the fact that the only thing preventing his sister and niece from seeing my boobs and beaver is a very thin layer of untied material. “It’s…uh…nice to meet you.”

“And it’s really nice to meet you.” Her responding smile is nothing but tickled and amused. “I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting one of Mack’s female friends. I have to say this has truly made my day.”

“Lizzy,” Mack interjects, his body still facing away from his sister and niece. “Do you mind taking Gracie into the living room for a moment?” His voice has taken on an edge of irritation. “I need to tell Katy something important.”
