I’d heard from Chloe twice already, but it was coming on time for her to be heading back. On the last call, I’d teased her about her hardheaded ass. She told her friends about me and they didn’t know who she was talking about she said. That’s because no one that young would know me by that name.

She was still calling me by my given name no matter how much I told her no one called me that; it has always been Stone. I don’t know, somehow when I hear the name I think of my dad. That’s the name he went by I guess it was my way of showing respect or some shit who knows.

Think of the devil. My phone rang while I was in the middle of showing one of the new guys what we did with the bikes. It was going to be a long time before any of them were ready to actually work on my shits, but there was no harm in walking them through it.

“Gavin.” This fucking girl.

“Yes.” She better not be calling to tell me she was gonna be late. I’d already put my gut through enough for one day. It was going to be a long fucking time before I let her out of my sight again. I hadn’t had time to put a tracker on her car. I’d been too preoccupied in the last couple weeks.

“I’m being followed.” If my gut was in knots before it went into free fall at her words.

“What do you mean followed?” I kept my voice calm and steady but I was already on the move.

“These guys on bikes.” They don’t look familiar.” Her voice was shaky and scared. I could hear traffic in the background so that was not a good thing.

“How many?”

“Ten fifteen, I don’t know.” She was yelling at the end and I was running.

“Where are you?”

“I’m on liberty I just left the gas station.”

“Head for fifty-one come to me baby, I’m on my way. Stay on the line.” I whistled and my guys came running. They mounted up when they saw me do the same. I had her in one ear and the mouthpiece in my helmet giving Danny the lowdown.

“You hanging in there, baby? How far back are they?”

“They’re right on my ass, I’m scared Gavin.” I knew it.

“No you’re not, you’re not afraid of anything. You’re my warrior princess and don’t you forget it.” She sniffled and my gut hurt.

I talked to her about nonsense bullshit. About the first day she’d come to me, about what I was going to do to her tonight when I got her horizontal. Anything to take her mind and mine off the fact that she was being hunted.

“Almost there baby.” I saw her car and saw the bikes coming in hard on her tail. I gave the hand signal for my boys to make an opening down the middle. “Go through baby.” She gunned it and went through and the boys closed in behind her.

The fuckers were coming too hard to turn back and those who tried ended up kissing asphalt. I was too pissed to care that they were other cars and shit on the road. All I saw was red.

I said one word and the gates of hell opened up. “War.” Shots rang out and bodies started hitting the ground. We didn’t stop popping off shots until the last man fell, then we turned and headed back the way we came. We’d been going the wrong way down the highway but who the fuck cares?

By the time we heard the first siren, we were well away.

She had the sense to head to the club and not the house. I’m gonna have to check my place out before I take her home. I’m pretty sure that was Sanchez back there.

When we pulled in she was just sitting behind the wheel staring straight ahead. I opened the door and pulled her out and into my arms. “You’re okay baby, it’s over.” She was shaking so hard I don’t think she even heard me.

Cisco came over to see what was going on. He would understand why I didn’t ask him along, it would look suspicious as fuck. The men from her father’s crew saw her for the first time and came our way.

“What happened?”

“Sanchez just tried to grab her.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.” I was pretty sure of that shit, my boys don’t shoot to maim.

“The law?”

“Not worried about that now. Shit went down too fast for anyone to know who was who.” But if shit came down, I’d handle it. “I gotta go take care of my girl.”

She hadn’t said a word since I took her out of the car. I took her to the office and poured her a drink. She sipped it mechanically, still in a daze. I saw the flashing lights out the window. “Fuck! I’ll be right back baby stay here.” I kissed her hair and stood up to leave,
