But not Gabby. She’s never once made a move. Desire burns in her gaze when she looks at me, but she’s never even tried to flirt. Instead, my little kitten looks at me with her innocent gaze, as if imploring me to pick her up and take her back to my home where she belongs.

She manages to get out the words, “What does she need done?”

Six months ago, I was in town and spotted Gabby. I thought she was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen. Still do. That was the moment I knew I had to get close to her. I traded my brand-new truck in for a piece of shit that barely runs.

I told her it was a family heirloom when she gently suggested that maybe it was time for an upgrade. It’s the only lie I’ve ever told her, and I figure I can be forgiven for it. She’s an angel. No one can fault me for wanting to be around her.

The shitty truck does its job by regularly breaking down on me. Sure, sometimes I have to help it along. Doesn’t matter though. It’s worth it for getting a few minutes in her presence.

I’m head over heels for this girl who’s thirty years my junior. Not that it matters. Her fate was sealed the moment I laid eyes on my girl. The beast in me roars, wanting to carry her back to my cabin already.

I grunt my response to her, not even sure what I’ve said. Finally, I pass her my keys and leave. If I stay any longer, I’m going to open my mouth and say all the filthy things I’ve spent the last few months thinking about.

As it is, I’m waiting on a report from my private investigator. Once he gives me all the details about Gabby’s brother, I’ll have everything I need. The punk is trouble. I suspect he’s the reason why she has to work so damn hard. That’s changing soon.

I don’t know exactly how I’ll handle the guy yet. If he’s lucky, I’ll buy him out for pennies on the dollar. If he’s not so lucky, he’ll live in absolute squalor for the rest of his life thanks to his treatment of my beautiful girl.

I stomp from the garage and go next door to Hale’s gym. When she’s my girl, I’ll keep her happy. I’ll keep her filled with my come, always bouncing on my cock. Fuck, she’ll want for nothing. In or out of my bedroom.

The air-conditioned gym is filled with sweating men, grunting at each other as they square off on the mats. My dress shoes squeak against the floors, and I manage a nod to Blade. He’s here with Jacob, a fatherless kid he’s mentoring.

Bypassing all of my friends, I head up the stairs to Hale’s office. He’s hunched over his laptop, probably working on his decision matrix. Might look like pure muscle, but he’s got a hell of a head on his shoulders. Rumor is he’s a serial entrepreneur that can turn anything he touches into gold. Of course, like most of the guys around here, he keeps a low profile.

“You’re here for the keys,” he says as soon as I enter the office without bothering to knock. I didn’t bother with it because we both know he doesn’t have a woman up here with him. I still don’t know why he hasn’t made a move on Ivy, the bubbly girl down at the dessert shop.

I wait and don’t move to take the keys from where they’re in plain sight on his desk. He’s not going to be driving again for a while, and we both know it.

He looks up from the screen. “I’m fine.”

“Are you feeling weird?” I was with him last week. I’m the one who found him unconscious. He eventually came back around, but he was out of it. His speech was slurred, and his body was exhausted. Little fuckin’ wonder after what he went through.

He scowls at me. “I’ve been dealing with it for half my life.”

“I’ll be gone for at least a week with back-to-back client meetings followed by the start of new projects,” I explain. It’s shaping up to be the biggest and most profitable year in the history of my construction company. All that money and the only thing I want to do is drape a certain curvy mechanic in diamonds. I’ll make it so that her life is easy, so that she never has to work again. I’ll make her my queen. “If you need anything, call Blade.”

Hale nods, but we both know he’s not going to. He’s stubborn, and if it hadn’t been for last week, I wouldn’t even know what he’s dealing with on his own.

I tried to suggest help for him. I encouraged him to get someone to look after him or at the very least, a service animal. But he waved off my suggestions. He’s gotten used to being on his own out here in Courage.
