“Pregnancy is not something that scares me, Maritza. I’m in this for the long run. If something happens it’s a gift and I will not ever regret it.”
I smile, but the disappointment is hitting me. “Dillon, you should know,” I whisper as the words are failing me. “The likelihood of a pregnancy is slim. When I got shot,” his face changes instantly at the reminder, “they had to remove one ovary.” He nods but doesn’t speak. “While I have one healthy ovary remaining, the amount of scar tissue in and around my uterus make it almost impossible for implantation.”
“Are you telling me, you can’t have kids, Maritza? You won’t be able to be a mother?”
I nod unable to speak the words.
“Fuck,” he mutters before climbing in the bed beside me and pulling me close. “I am sorry, baby. I don’t know what to say. You have been this amazing mom to Hollis,” I reach up and cover his lips.
“And Dillon, that has been the greatest experience and gift of my lifetime. If I never have kids of my own, I have held that boy as a baby and watched him grow into a young man and eventually a grown man.”
“You didn’t watch, baby. You raised him and you will be here for every milestone for the rest of his life if I have anything to say about it,” Dillon promises.
I sigh. “Pinch me,” I tell him trying to lighten the mood. “This can’t be real.”
He rolls over kissing me once again and reminding me just how real all of this is as he gives me two more orgasms before morning comes.
If this is a dream, I don’t want to ever wake up.
Waking up draped over him, my body is deliciously sore. I shift slightly to move out of his hold to instantly feel his hand cup my naked ass and squeeze.
“Good morning,” I comment with an early morning rasp to my voice.
“Don’t know that I’ve ever slept so good in my life,” he shares before rolling into me and pressing his lips to my forehead.
I let out a hum in agreement. I could literally lay here all day.
“Things got a little heavy last night. Are you okay?”
Jerking my head back I look at him in question.
“The baby stuff. Does it bother you?”
I relax into him once again. “I’m not gonna lie and say it was the easiest news. In the beginning it was a hard thing to digest. Now though, it’s just what is supposed to happen.”
“It’s not impossible,” he reminds me.
I nod, “impossible no, but the statistics aren’t in my favor. I made peace with it.”
“We can try fertility treatments, like where they implant the embryos.”
A laugh escapes me, “Dillon Jacoby, did you just say you want to have a baby with me?”
He sighs, “told you baby, I’m all in. I’m a simple man. I want love of family. It’s not complicated. I want to build something meaningful for my kids.”
“And what if you don’t get to have more kids?” Her voice is soft as if she’s trepidatiously asking me.
I shift rolling her to her back as I lay over her bracing myself on my forearms as I rest my hips between her legs as she wraps them around me. “Baby, I’ve never had something feel so easy, so right. I want to build a life with you. I’m not some young boy, I know what I want and I want to go after it. If we don’t have kids, we have Hollis. We are going to build a beautiful life together. I promise to give you my all.”
She smiles at me, “I love you.”
I press my lips to hers and she opens. Softly, I take my time kissing her.
“I love you, Maritza. I want this for the future.”
She nods, “me too. Especially the orgasms,” she laughs shimming under me.
“I can do that,” I mutter against her lips before going about giving her an early morning wake up release.
I could absolutely spend every morning like this and die one happy motherfucker.
EPILOGUE
DILLON
One Year Later
The annual Hellions barbecue is here. Every year it grows bigger and bigger. Maritza is standing with Dia and Emmalee arranging side dishes on the table inside the clubhouse.
I’m leaning against the bar taking a pull from my beer when Toon comes over. He looks right to Dia.
“How’d you do it, brother?” He asks me and I look to him confused as he nods to the prospect to get him a beer.
“What exactly?”
“Get Ruby okay with you and Zizi?” That is a loaded question coming from him.
“Ah, I get it. You and Dia?” he nods at my question, “Shit with me and Zizi has been broken and backwards. We basically had this pseudo-family thing for years even when Anna was around. Ruby knows how much she loves Hollis. Hell, they all embrace him as their own. It’s a different situation, brother. We played house without playing house for years.”
