By the time the mask peeled off, Jenna was knuckle-deep into my roots, massaging products into my hair and using various hot irons to give my drab brown locks some much-needed body.

I silently sat there, mostly staring at Symone’s boobs as she worked on my face or looking her awkwardly in the eye as she gave short commands like open, shut, look down. I smiled, made fish faces, and puckered exactly when told and by the time they were finished, I didn’t recognize the woman in the mirror.

“Whoa.”

“Didn’t realize you were such a bombshell, did you?” Jenna said, proudly packing up her tools.

“Mr. Davenport’s going to love it. Should I send him in for a sneak peek?”

“Hale’s here?” My heart tripped against my ribs and raced into a sprint.

“He’s in the room next door. You know men. They just have to dress. He’s been waiting and is probably bored out of his mind.”

Hale was here. Why did that make me more nervous than usual? “Should I get dressed?”

Symone removed the black cape that had been protecting my clothes. “Your clothes are all freshly steamed. Dress and I’ll send him over in a few minutes.”

Relieved to finally be alone, I examined my reflection. My eyes were smoked out with shimmering greys and dramatic black coal. The false lashes Symone applied were so heavy every blink clicked. They looked like caterpillars sleeping on my eyelids.

My hair swept into the full-bodied up-do of a dangerous CEO. I looked beautiful but scary, not at all like myself.

Stripping out of my clothes, I unzipped the jumpsuit.

“Rayne?”

“N—naked!” The door opened and I gasped, covering my front.

Hale quickly slipped inside, locking the door behind him. “Wow, look at you.”

I blushed and looked away, embarrassed by how silly these lengths must appear to him. “It looks like I’m trying too hard.”

He crossed the room. “No, it doesn’t. Why are you hiding yourself?” He caught my wrists and gently pulled them to my sides so he could see my lace bra and panties. “These are new.” His finger grazed my breast where the scalloped edge of the bra curved against my chest.

“Your sister sent me some lingerie.”

“I’ll be sure to thank her.” He glanced at my ass where the thong disappeared between my cheeks and grinned with approval. “What’s wrong?”

I found a prenup hidden in your closet, I wanted to say. But instead, I shook my head and said, “Nothing. Just nervous.”

“About the interview? Don’t be. I’ve done this a thousand times before.”

“Gotten married?”

He chuckled. “No, been interviewed. It’s like any other press. You give them a few juicy headlines and some good sound bites and they’re happy.”

I didn’t like how he compared it to the interviews he did for business.

“Hey.” He cupped my jaw. “You haven’t even kissed me yet. I missed you.”

Leaning forward, I gave him a chaste kiss on the cheek, worried I might mess up my hair or makeup.

He frowned. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing. I need to get dressed.”

He glanced at the jumpsuit hanging to my right. “I kind of prefer what you’re wearing now.” His hand cupped my ass, his fingers sliding dangerously close to business-town and I stiffened.

“Hale—”

“What?”

“My hair—”

“Looks beautiful.”

“They’re waiting for us.”

“So let them wait. I haven’t seen you in days.”

I glanced nervously at the door.

He caught my chin and turned my attention back to him. “You’re always like this whenever I’m gone for more than a few days.” He pulled my back against his front. His hand slowly glided down my bare stomach, his words whispering close to my ear. “Shy.” His fingertips edged closer to my panties. “Nervous. It reminds me of that first night we spent together. Remember?”

His thumb teased lower and I sucked in a sharp breath. “Yes.”

“You were so set on not enjoying yourself I had to practically force you to let me kiss you here.” He slipped his finger under the lace and I shut my eyes. “This always calms you down when you’re nervous, doesn’t it baby?”

“Me nervous?”

“You. Nervous. Like you are now.” He slid the panties past my hips and they fell to the floor. “Relax.” His mouth teased my neck, then my shoulder. His lips trailed softly over my skin as he slowly turned me.

“Hale, they’re waiting for us.”

“Let them wait.” He kissed my breasts, teasing my nipples into sharp points. “I’m not leaving this room until I taste my future wife.”

A stuttering breath skipped into my lungs as he pressed another finger inside of me. I gripped the vanity at my back for balance.

“That’s it, baby.” He nudged my thighs apart and purposely took his time to make his point. He was powerful Hale Davenport. The world waited for him. “There’s my good girl.” He sucked my nipples and slowly fingered me. “So wet. Did you miss this?”

“Yes.”

“I missed it too. When I was in meetings, I’d find myself getting hard, thinking about how I wanted to eat you for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as soon as I got home.”
