We fooled around for the rest of the afternoon while Kev and Dave tried to teach her how to play poker. I just sat back and watched, grateful to them for the way they handled her, like a little sister.

We all had dinner together before it was time for our game which she insisted on joining. The atmosphere was light with laughter as the four of us joked around and the two stooges regaled her with tales of our wayward youth. The T.V. was on in the background for noise and I wasn’t paying attention until about a half an hour into the game when I heard this shit.

“The internet is abuzz these days with speculation about the differences in the relationships between business tycoon Gavin Sorrento and his two latest leading ladies. Some are saying that he seems way more attentive, even protective of his new love Giselle Moore, widow of the late Vance Moore.”

You could hear a pin drop in the room as the three of us turned our attention to the screen while she sat stock still, staring down at the cards in her hands.

“Speaking of which, some of that buzz couldn’t help but go to the negative with netizens accusing the new widow of social climbing. The ex model who walked the runway for more than eight years is said to have gone from one wealthy husband to another.” I crushed the cards in my hand.

“We’re left to wonder what the man who just bought her the thirteen million dollar rock she’s currently wearing on her finger have to say about that.”

“Turn it off. I want to own that studio by tomorrow morning.” Kev hit the off button on the remote and dropped down on the chair next to mine. I heard the first sniffle and turned to see her crying. Kev and Dave made the excuse that they needed a drink and headed to the kitchen while I pulled her up from her chair and sat her on my lap.

I turned the TV back on and turned her face to the screen. “You see her.” I pointed to the shit peddler who’d moved on to fucking up someone else’s evening. “If you keep crying she’s going to die. I’m sure she’s just reading something that someone else put in front of her to get ratings and have nothing to do with the bullshit she just spewed. But if you drop one more tear she’s done.”

My words had the desired effect of drying her tears instantly and I even got a laugh out of her. “That’s not funny.” She took one look at my face and saw that I was far from playing. “Gavin!” I do love that scolding tone of hers.

I patted her leg and got her to stand. “Why don’t you head on up, I need to have a talk with Kev and Dave.”

“You’re not going to do anything rash are you?”

“Nope!” Hell if I’ll ever expose her to the kind of violence I’m capable of.

“What are we going to do about this shit?” Kev asked as he stuffed half of a sandwich in his mouth when he walked back into the room and saw that she was gone.

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?” Dave sounded incredulous.

“We wont have to, Amy will take care of it.”

“That succubus is probably pissed that you broke the engagement and married someone else so soon after. Who knows what the hell she’ll do.”

“Yes, but her pride won’t stand for this. Besides, she knows I’d destroy her if she crossed me on this so she won’t, she’s too smart for that.”

They both gave it some thought and came to the same conclusion based on the woman they knew. I could almost write the words she’d say to the press. And they won’t have to go searching for her, she’d be the one to contact them. I’d say within the next twenty-four hours.

“Which asshole owns that station, is it Tanner or Cox?” These fucks like to play games with the public. One man would own multiple stations and play one against the other. Kev was already on what looked like a phone but was so much more upon closer inspection.

“Once you find out I want a rundown of every news outlet he owns.” Sometimes having too much money comes in handy. “In fact, I think I’ll let dad handle it. He knows that crowd better than I do and since he likes to stick his nose in my shit….see what I mean.”

My phone had just rung with my parents’ home number on the readout. “Did you see?”

“Yeah, I saw it.”

“And your wife, did she see it as well?”

“Yeah!”

“As you know, our family name is never to be bandied about. It appears someone is trying to slap me in the face. I’ll take care of this you don’t need to worry.” He didn’t even give me a chance to answer, just said what he had to and hung up.
