Chapter 26

Posey

Everything feels magical as we head back to our room at the Rosewood Cottage. Ledger can’t keep his hands off me, and it makes me feel sexy, the way his hands linger along my skin, tracing invisible patterns that send shivers down my spine.

“I wish we could live here forever,” I say as soon as Ledger locks the door behind us. The soft light from the vintage lamp casts a warm, cozy flicker in the room.

“We can,” he says, removing his shirt in one swift motion. His tattoos catch my eye, the intricate designs traveling up and down his tanned skin.

“We can’t. We have to head back to our real lives. Have you heard from Chloe yet?” I ask, trying to focus on the present.

He pulls his phone out of his pocket and swipes it on. “She sent a text, letting me know her cousin Vin will be extracting us soon.”

I step closer to him, wrapping my arms around his waist and nuzzling my face just below his collarbone, breathing in his familiar scent. “I’m scared,” I confess, my voice barely above a whisper.

He tosses the phone onto the bed and folds me into his embrace. “Don’t be. We’re in this together, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

I want to believe him. I really do, but I’m terrified of the man Bane is. He’s a monster, capable of hurting us in every way possible.

“Remember what Mayor Thornberg said,” Ledger says, his voice steady and reassuring.

I lean back to gaze into his eyes. “What?”

“Bane’s broke. He’s got no money, and I’m willing to bet he doesn’t have as many allies as we think he does.”

I blow out a deep breath. “I hope you’re right.”

“I am,” he whispers across my skin, peppering kisses along my cheek, behind my ear, and down the column of my throat, each touch igniting a spark of hope within me.

“Ledger, as long as you never let me go, I can make it through anything,” I say, wishing more than anything that this could all be over soon.

The room feels like a safe haven, a cocoon where time stands still. The outside world and all its dangers seem distant, almost unreal. In Ledger’s arms, I find a flicker of courage, a promise that together we can face whatever comes our way.

He moves me closer to the bed, discarding our clothes along the way. “I want to make love to you,” he breathes.

“Show me how much you love me, Ledger,” I plead with him.

He smooths his hand over my hair. “I love you so fucking much.” He kisses me tenderly, reverently almost, his tongue tracing over mine. He lowers me onto the bed as tears well in my eyes.

I don’t want this to be the last time we’re together, but I can’t help being scared. Ledger helps ease those fears away as he caresses my body all night long.

He makes sweet love to me, gingerly, embracing my body. We move together like two long lost souls, searching for their perfect match in one another. Together we find it in each other, and as my body catapults into a most epic orgasm, I beg Ledger to never let me go.

He makes promises with every tender kiss he places on my heated skin. He assures me this isn’t the last time with each stroke of his dick inside me.

Our bodies build and fall together, both of us finding our ultimate release over and over again as the stars watch over us, casting their light through the curtains.

As soon as we finally fall asleep, we’re awakened by Ledger’s phone.

It’s time.

The hour is late as we finally settle into a hotel on the outskirts of Saint Pierce. True to his word, Vin Mills orchestrated our extraction, deploying agents who whisked us away to safety.

Now, as we wait, fatigue weighs me down. It's a strange limbo, not knowing what lies ahead, but the comfort of having Ledger by my side is everything.

After preparing for bed, I emerge from the bathroom to find Ledger reclined on the mattress, clad only in a pair of gray joggers. His casual posture turns me on. Every line of his form seems sculpted, drawing my gaze to every detail.

"Hey," I greet him softly.

His eyes lock with mine, and in that moment, it feels as though the intensity of his gaze could set the room on fire. “Come here,” he says, and I move toward him without thinking.

I move over top of him, straddling his lap. “I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here with me.”

“You’ll never have to find out,” he whispers across my lips before capturing them in a soul-searing kiss.

I grind against his body, his hardness, needing frantically to feel him again.

It’s as if he’s just as desperate, because his body is rock hard beneath me. Even though we just made love merely a few hours ago, we’re still so urgent for one another.
