It was the agreed place for the handover.
She reached the tree.
The person who met her had their hair up under a hat and was wearing big glasses.
“Operation get-rid-of-the-punishment-book is underway,” Ellie muttered into a pink, sparkly walkie-talkie. “Over and out.”
“I hear you, Pink Bear. Over and out.”
“Thanks for doing this, Pink Bear,” she said to Ellie, passing her the book.
“You are welcome, Kitty-Cat. Blue Octopus will make sure that this book never sees the light of day. It is our mission, and we will die to see it through.” Ellie placed her hand on her heart. “This I swear.”
“And I owe you both a life debt.”
“We do this for Littles everywhere who wish to sit down comfortably.”
Ellie took off at a fast pace, watching her surroundings carefully.
Moving stealthily, Gwen made her way back to the cabin. Dominic would be back soon. He still didn’t like being away from her for long, even though Davidson and the men who had kidnapped her had been arrested. Even Darius was out of the picture, he’d turned up dead in Chicago from an overdose.
Was it bad to be relieved?
She knew a big part of it was because she hadn’t been coping that well in the two months since her kidnapping. She’d had her up and down moments. After Davidson and his accomplices were arrested, she’d thought things would finally get better. And they had for a bit. Right before they’d gotten much worse again. Her nightmares and panic attacks had come back with a vengeance.
Archer was helping a lot with those, but he said she had to be patient. That it would take time.
Davidson had confessed to arranging to have her kidnapped and Clarke killed.
Clarke had only told her half the story that night she’d been kidnapped. He’d left out the part where Davidson had caught him spying in the restaurant. After having Clarke searched, he’d found the card she’d given him with her details.
It had made Davidson even more suspicious of her. Especially after she’d been seen on camera wandering around the back of the restaurant.
He’d also been angry at her for reporting Darius to the cops and forcing him to leave Wishingbone.
It turned out Darius wasn’t actually washing the dishes at Delicious. Nope, he was the guy who transported the drugs.
So Davidson had decided that she had was a problem to be taken care of.
Forever.
He’d used Clarke to draw her out and keep her talking while two members of the Tovan gang got into position, ready to kidnap her.
What she didn’t understand is why Clarke had told her the truth about what Davidson was up to. Maybe because he’d wanted to get it off his chest . . . even if he thought she was going to be murdered.
Once Clarke had ceased being useful, Davidson had him killed. The guys he’d sent to take care of her should have made sure she was dead, but they’d been interrupted by her bearded, flannel-wearing friend, Arlo Stevens.
She took a deep breath in and let out slowly. She’d come so close to dying. It was still terrifying to think about.
And sitting around doing nothing meant that all she did was think.
So she’d decided she needed to decide what she was going to do with her life. She was going to use her skills as a lawyer to help those that couldn’t stand up for themselves. Animals and children. She wasn’t sure what that would look like currently, but she felt a lot better having a plan.
She also felt a lot better knowing that her old boss, Chad, had gotten what he deserved. Reuben had found a whole lot of evidence that old Chad had been dodging paying the taxman.
He was currently looking at jail time.
And she didn’t feel even a little bit sorry for him.
She and Dominic were going to head to her place in Brooklyn soon with a bit trailer to bring back the things she wanted. The lease was nearly up, which was convenient. She didn’t need it anymore. She wasn’t ever going back there to live.
Of course, to start her new career path, she’d have to convince Dominic that she could leave the ranch without him. Tonight was a small step. She was going to the trivia night at the Wishing Well. He was coming too. But he’d promised to sit at the Daddy table and not to hover.
Too much.
However, before they left, he was coming home to take care of the punishments she was owed.
Yay.
Hence the reason for operation ‘get rid of the punishment book’.
Kent had moved Dominic into a management position to free Kent up for more time with his young family and to ensure Dominic didn’t have to leave her. At least not so soon after she was attacked.
It was both a good and bad thing.
Good, because she got to spend more time with Dominic.
