“Right before I found out your girlfriend thought she was pregnant? Yeah.”

“Ex-girlfriend.”

“Exactly,” I whispered, looking into his eyes.

“Lots—”

“I’m not over you either, Noah. I never was.” I drew in a deep breath, slowly letting it back out. “Maybe we could start fresh. We’re not the same people we were ten or eleven years ago. I just… It feels like a second chance to work something out.”

Noah moved and closed the car door, then took my face in his hands, gently cradling it. “We can start fresh. Get to know each other all over again. However it works… or however long it takes. I’m not going anywhere, Lots. Let’s figure it out together.”

I let my lips curl into a small smile. “We have got to learn how to talk to each other, though.”

He grinned, and his shoulders trembled with a quiet laugh. “That was what I meant when I said we have to figure it out together.”

I pouted, peering up at him through my lashes. “I’m still mad at you.”

“Yeah, but you’re not yelling at me anymore, so I’ll take it.”

“Yelling gives me a headache.”

“Good news for me.” His eyes twinkled, and he brushed his thumb over my cheek. “We’ll figure it out. Even the whole talking to each other part.”

“You’re optimistic.” I smiled. “My doctor said I can start light exercise again, as long as I take it easy. I don’t talk much, but I wanted to get out in the morning.”

“I don’t have work until ten tomorrow. I can meet you on the beach. Wait, can you drive again yet?”

I pointed at my car. “It didn’t get itself here, did it?”

Noah smiled. “Half seven? At the rock pools?”

“Yeah. I’m warning you, though, I can’t run. I can only walk, and I’ll probably have an audiobook in my ears.”

“I think I can handle that.”

He lowered his face, then paused. My heart skipped in anticipation, and I leant in towards him, answering his unspoken question. Our lips came together oh-so-slowly, finally touching as I wrapped my arms around his firm body.

Everything else melted away, leaving nothing but the soft brush of his lips against mine, of his fingers threading into my hair and mine balling his shirt into my fists.

Of all the kisses, in all the places, this was the most magical one. Actions spoke louder than words, and this kiss didn’t speak—it shouted.

Shouted apologies and hopes, regrets and promises, all bundled in together.

And the hint that maybe, after everything, there was still something between us that was worth fighting for.
