“She texted me this morning too. Tink gave me a lawyer’s number to help me fight custody for Kaden.” Burn looked at Wizard worriedly. “I went to his office, and he’s going to file an emergency hearing. You think I’m walking into a trap?”

Wizard raked his hand through his long hair. “I have no fucking clue. She’s not scheduled to work until this weekend. It wouldn’t do any good to call or text her. If it’s a trap, she won’t tell the truth anyway.”

“Let me see if I have this right,” Shade said from the doorway. “Tink is Doom’s woman?”

Doom nodded.

“You going to see her tonight?”

“I had planned to see her last night, but she didn’t come home to her apartment. I think she stayed at her parents’,” Doom revealed.

“Shiiiit…” Wizard hissed angrily. “It’s a fucking trap. I knew it was too fucking good to be true. Hell, I’ll probably be served with papers that Daniel Boone pissed here, and this place is going to become a historical site.”

“Let’s not get carried away,” Shade said reasonably. “What do you think, Doom? Is your woman trying to be helpful, or is she a vindictive bitch like Margarita?”

“I’m not vindictive!” Margarita cried out. “Haven was the one being vindictive. How was I supposed to guess she would go trash Tink at work?”

Shade stared at her piercingly with his blue eyes. “You might not have expected your cousin to go off on Tink at work, but what about somewhere else? If they work together, it would be a fair guess Haven would confront her somewhere else or in front of their co-workers.”

Margarita shook her head. “No, because Haven says no one has anything to do with Tink at work. Tink thinks she’s too good to be friends with any of them.”

Doom watched his footing as he stepped closer to Margarita. “Bullshit. That doesn’t sound like Tink at all.”

“How would you know?” Margarita argued back heatedly. “How do you know she hasn’t been making fools out of all of you?” Antagonistically, she jutted her chin out at Wizard. “The other night, Jesus and you wanted to marry her for fixing a fucking cooling coil. I haven’t heard you offering to marry me despite how many fucking blowjobs I’ve given you. Shade, Wizard’s giving her votes as if they’re confetti while the rest of us take months to earn them.”

Margarita’s venomous rant had the brothers’ expressions growing cold.

“I was unaware you felt that way.”

Doom could practically see ice particles dripping with each word Wizard spoke.

Margarita, who seemed about to snap back at Wizard’s comment, must have belatedly realized she had gone too far. Her expression turned pleading.

“I didn’t mean it the way it sounded, Wizard”, she tried to backtrack hastily, glancing around at the faces in the room, trying to find someone to support her. Not even Kat stepped up to take her back.

“You didn’t seem to have a problem with Tink when she brought that eyeshadow palette you searched high and low for and asked all of us to buy if we found it before it was sold out, and she didn’t say jack shit when you didn’t pay her back.”

Doom placed a calming hand on Kat’s back. The woman was shaking, she was so angry at Margarita.

Margarita flushed at being called out by the other woman. Then, finding no support, she tried again to turn the tide her way. “Why are you all taking up for her? She’s turning us all against each other. We all know she lied about how she earned Puck and Buck’s votes. They went along with the lie for Super Bowl tickets.”

“Were you in the room?” Wizard asked. “It was no skin off our ass. We were all happy to see some of us get to go. If it bothered you so fucking bad, why didn’t you ask for a church meeting?”

“I thought she would be found out as a fake. Doom didn’t believe it was a coincidence, either. He’s sergeant-of-arms; it never crossed my mind he would sweep her lies under the rug and make her his property.”

This spitefulness was what he had been afraid of. Under the scrutiny of Shade and Wizard, Doom knew he didn’t have a leg to stand on. Tink had practically confessed to the tradeoff and the repercussions if she failed to live up to the agreement the three had made.

“We’ll still have the church meeting tonight concerning your punishment, Margarita. Friday before the party, we’ll have another meeting regarding Tink, Puck, and Buck.” Wizard didn’t seem any more thrilled about the upcoming meeting than he was.

Fuck it to hell and back, Doom was well aware none of them would get in trouble for the tradeoff for the votes. It was the lying about how it occurred that would draw the punishment. It was the punishment Doom had tried to save Tink from.
