Then again, I couldn’t. It was impossible. And she was too damaged to even try. She was probably the safest bet of someone who understood a sexual business transaction than anyone. But I’d be a dick to take it.

Her eyes zeroed in on my mouth. “How to survive.”

I shook my head.

Her hands moved to the sides of my head and held me there so I could only see her, my focus on the tears in her eyes, on the fierce determination in the way she held an assassin hostage like she wasn’t afraid and needed that same assassin to teach her how to live the way he did.

I didn’t want that for her.

I didn’t say yes.

But I knew I couldn’t say no, not if it saved what good parts she had left of her, but what, in the end, would that do to me?

I’d walk away like I always did. She’d go back to her perfect life and family, and she’d be better for it—if I did it right, if I trained her right, she’d get her revenge, she’d get her one taste of blood, and I’d walk away knowing that I, at least, had done one thing right in this godforsaken life, by saving hers, and giving her a second chance to move past the pain.

In tormented ecstasy, I grabbed her by the wrists and slowly lowered her arms. Her gaze flickered down to our joined hands. I lifted my right hand and lightly touched her face. I would either regret this or say it was the most perfect decision I’d ever made in my existence.

I didn’t have to lean far to connect with her mouth. With painful self-restraint and torture, I massaged her lips, I tasted her gently, softly, the way she deserved. I wasn’t used to it, so foreign it was not to just fuck but to actually kiss someone, to take your time to make sure they felt good. She snaked her arms around my neck. I moved my hands to her thighs and gripped her by the ass, pulling her against me. Her tongue shoved into my mouth.

Fuck me.

One hand stayed on her ass, the other moved to her hair, gripping her skull as strands of white-blond tangled in my fingertips, getting caught on the Sinacore Family crest on my ring.

Just more evidence.

I didn’t say yes yet.

But I kept kissing her anyway.

And I could have sworn I saw the gun pointed at my head, Andrei lifting it high into the air.

And me, still kissing her, with a smile on my face.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

“We don’t break our captains. We kill them.” —Vincent Gigante

Katya

I’d officially snapped.

He tasted like dark secrets and hostility—something that should have made me feel less safe, and yet, I couldn’t stop myself from moving my hips across his as he dug his fingertips into my bare thighs and held me in place.

Santino pulled back, his eyes heavy with bad intentions. “You’ll get in over your head with me.”

“You’ll get in over your head with me,” I countered, mouth swollen from the way he both kissed and simultaneously sucked my lips with each caress.

He smirked and looked away, still holding me against him. “I don’t play well with others.”

“And that should surprise me, how?”

He sighed, resting his forehead against my chest, his breathing was labored; it was a crack in his armor, almost like I could see it and feel it as he rested his head against my chest, his lips on my bare skin, his tongue sneaking out and tracing my collarbone in feather-light licks.

Goosebumps broke out on my skin, followed by his dark chuckle and sliding hands… up, up, up until he was cupping my bare ass again. His hands were warm to the touch as he lifted me into the air. “Fine, you wanna play? Unzip my pants.”

It was a challenge. He was trying to get me to chicken out, say I was kidding, and say that it was all bravado. It wasn’t. I needed him, and I was willing to do whatever it took to learn how to defend myself, how to seduce others, read them, and how to get my revenge, and he was the only one who would even think about teaching me. He was a rule breaker.

And he was with me twenty-four seven, so who better to help me learn how to become a true daughter of the mafia than the man who’d killed my captor?

My fingers shook as I held his stare and slowly unzipped his pants.

“So this is how we’re going to play it,” he murmured. “You want something. You fucking take it. That’s how this little game works. So what do you want, Katya? Do you want me to train you? Fuck you? Fight you? What do you want?”

My eyes filled with tears, but I refused to let them spill over. “I want myself back. I want my power back.”
