“Who’s paying for what? Everything’s already been taken care of. All you ladies need to do is choose the stuff you like. That reminds me Sian, we need to pick something up for Maggie.”
He’s right. My little sister was not too happy when she learned that she wouldn’t be going away with us, and mom wouldn’t let her come on this shopping trip either because as she said, she’d just be in the way.
Now with Jace’s little announcement everyone was more relaxed, though I still had to coax Belle and Tammy into getting what they really liked. They both got their first designer bags and I had to pinch them the rest of the day to get them to choose stuff from the other stores.
“You can’t wear bags to the beach. We need swimwear and shorts and…”
“I’m not wearing a swimsuit, I’d look like a beached whale.” I was about to take Belle to task for those words but my brother beat me to it.
“Red, come here.” I don’t know what he said to her but her head was down and her cheeks red when she walked back over to the rack to choose a bathing suit. Go Jared!

“You sure it’s nice enough?” I knew I was making an ass of myself, that it was the third or fourth time I was asking, but I was nervous as hell and with good reason. We were only days away from going on our trip and I was about to make one of the biggest moves of my life.
I thought the hardest part would be asking her dad, who was surprisingly understanding after grilling me for what felt like hours before giving me his consent.
But now that that was over, I was worried that she wouldn’t like her ring. “You said this ring was your great grandmother’s right. The great grandmother who was one of the leading ladies of the big screen in her time? What do you think?”
“You’re right Jace, and it isn’t too small or anything.”
“Shane the shit’s about four carats what the fuck.”
‘Take it easy on him Jace, he’s young yet.”
“Track, what the fuck, we’re the same age.”
“On paper maybe kid.” His shit took my mind off of being nervous and the five of us reverted back to form, ragging on each other. Even though Jared is new, he just fit right in with us, giving as good as he got. And I guess that’s why Jace likes him, he’s already one of us.
I can’t believe the year we’ve had, the changes, the friends, and loves that we’ve found. I looked around at my boys, remembering the years leading up to this. “We’ve been together a long time huh guys.”
“Some of us since birth.”
“Yeah, Alex, you’re the only one not married or getting engaged….”
“She’s still too young, he needs another six months. She’ll be sixteen then and you’d better not fuck up.”
“Damn Jace, do you know everything?
“What, what does he know? Who’s he talking about Alex?” Now I was the one feeling like the newbie.
“Who are we talking about? Your God sister?”
That was Track’s question to Jace.
“Who’s his God sister? He doesn’t have a God sister, do you have a God sister?” What the hell? “The young one over there.” We all turned to look when Track pointed at Cassie.
“Since when?” Where the hell have I been?
“Her mom and mine started their acting careers together. Then mom got married, had me, while her mom went on to make movies. They use to be pretty tight, but then their lives kind of went in different directions for a while, but…” He shrugged.
“Does she know?”
“I doubt it, I don’t even think her mother remembers. According to mom, it wasn’t official, just something said between friends, but she still sees it that way and that’s all that matters isn’t it?”
He walked away and I got the feeling we’d just opened a can of worms. There was no time to dwell because the girls were on the move once again. “How many fucking stores does this bitch have in it? Good damn.”
“Amateur!” Track threw a candy wrapper at my head. I put him in a headlock because I was tired of his shit. “I’ve had just about enough of you young’un.” I gave him a head noogie and he tried to kick my legs from out under me. Good times.
The girls lectured us about behaving and we pretended to be on our best behavior for a while but the shit didn’t last and they gave up and tried to lose us until Jace clipped their leader’s wings and the bitch fest begun. Damn, I’m gonna miss this.
I never let myself think about things beyond high school, not really. When we were younger we used to joke that we’d always be together. Now that we’re older and I know a little bit more about how the real world works, I’m sure it’s not gonna happen.
