There was still a lot left to be done. As for my dad’s situation, all I needed were the results from the coffee and I’d take it from there. But there was one more thing I wanted to do for her, seeing as I was planning to put her mother away for a long, long time.

I didn’t mention it to her though, not yet. Not until I’ve vetted the man who was supposed to be her dad. That’s one of the things I’d been so busy doing this afternoon before mom’s call.

Once I made up my mind to keep her, that she was now mine, I wanted to give her everything. And though she believed the man didn’t want her, I wasn’t willing to leave it at Lisa’s word.

Lisa, shit, I’d forgotten about her again. But it gave me great pleasure to know that while my little family and I were enjoying a dinner made by me and my girl, she was left sitting in a cold cell with no way to get out. It wouldn’t begin to make up for the five years she’d put my lamb through, but it was a start.

Elaina

I’m still not sure that I did the right thing, but at least it feels like a boulder has been lifted from my shoulders. Not to mention the pressure on my chest that had been there since Lisa brought me here.

I have no doubt that they’d figure out what drug she’d used to get him to do her bidding and even less doubt that she’d finally end up in jail. I know they’re all saying now that it doesn’t matter that I’m her daughter, but how can I trust that?

How can I believe that it doesn’t matter to them when it’s always mattered to everyone else? To people she’d not harmed no less. I’d like to believe it. I actually like his family and him. I like the warmth the share that seems so real. And the fact that Luke is willing to go to such lengths to protect his mom.

His mom had been wonderful to me while we were out and about earlier. And I have to admit that I kept giving her secret looks to see if I would catch her off guard. I’ve learned to be very good at that. It’s the only way to avoid being caught in someone else’s trap.

But not once did she seem insincere. And though I wasn’t sure that I could trust that completely, at least I was having fun. For the first time in my life, someone was taking me shopping and not just for junk either.

I’d balked at some of the prices but she’d warned me that her son is very meticulous, and that he’d check to make sure I didn’t deny myself anything because of the cost. I’m not sure how true that was, but in the end it didn’t matter because she decided to choose for me.

And that’s where the trouble started. I don’t know how Lisa knew where we were or that we were even together. I’d been in the dressing room waiting for Ms. Sissy to bring me another dress to try on when Lisa burst into the room and dragged me out by my hair.

I was so startled at first that I had no idea what was going on. I’d screamed, which brought Ms. Sissy and another shopper back there to see what was going on. And that’s when Sissy had pulled us apart and tried to get between us.

No one had ever stood up to Lisa for me before, and though I appreciated it, I was afraid of what she would do to the older woman. And when she raised her hand to hit me again and Ms. Sissy got in the way, almost getting hit herself I’d had it.

After everything that I’d learned, it was the last straw. So I didn’t think before jumping in between them and pushing Lisa back and away from her. And that’s when she hit me across the face hard enough to knock my head back. At least it wasn’t the nice older woman.

Ms. Sissy had pulled me behind her back then and by then the store manager had gotten involved and I guess Ms. Sissy is well known there because when she told them to stop Lisa from leaving and to call the police they rushed to do her bidding without question.

Lisa of course, was fit to be tied, but there was nothing she could do. Not even when she tried to convince them that I was her daughter and it was just a simple family matter. The fact that I didn’t speak up on her behalf didn’t go over very well either.

I’d been scared for the last few hours but never showed it. Here I was in this foreign place, to me anyway, and the mother who’d brought me here was behind bars for trying to harm the mother of the man who’d taken my virginity.
