I was falling in love with Carter James. Or hell, maybe I was already there.

“I’m here. I’m sure it was a long day without me. Most people struggle to survive when I’m not around. How do we live without Carter James? I’ve heard it too many times to count, but breathe easily. I’m back,” Carter said as he swept into my apartment later that evening.

“You stayed the night last night. I saw you this morning.”

“Yes, but think of all those hours you missed me in between! I can’t imagine what you went through.” He set a takeout bag on the counter, walked over to where I was on the couch, and straddled my lap. “Was it really bad?”

“The worst,” I replied with a smirk. My hands found their way to his hips and held him. “I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to handle it. I thought about you all day. I almost died.”

“That’s a bit of an exaggeration, don’t you think?”

“Not with this ass,” I teased, grabbing said ass and squeezing.

“Good point.”

“You’re going to have to make it up to me.”

“I brought Chinese food,” Carter replied.

“Hmm.” I squeezed his ass again, loving this playful banter between us. I’d never had this with a lover before. “It’s a start. You might have to use your mouth on me first. I really like fucking it.”

“Well, that’s a no-brainer. You know I love to suck your dick. I thought you were going to ask me to do something I didn’t like.”

I laughed, but then Carter climbed off my lap, lowered himself to the floor, and began unbuttoning my jeans. Holy fuck, I’d only been kidding, but I sure as shit wasn’t going to complain about a blow job.

It took him less than five minutes to get me off—embarrassing but true. Carter was too good with that sexy mouth of his.

He buttoned me back up, licked the come off his lip, stood, then held his hand out for me. “Dinner?”

“I just fed you yours,” I teased.

“I like it when you talk to me like that. So fucking hot.” He winked, and I let him pull me to my feet.

We dished out our orange chicken and fried rice before sitting at the table together.

“How was your day?” he asked.

“Good. We were slow in the morning, but then it picked up after lunch. Beau came in.” And said I’m halfway in love with you… “He bought a gift card for Kenny’s girlfriend. How was your day?”

“Okay. Elliott’s been frazzled lately. I’m not sure what’s going on there.”

“Do you have any trips coming up?”

“Not that I know of at the moment, but you know how it goes. That can change from day to day.” His eyes caught mine as if he was trying to see how I responded to that. I smiled, because what else could I do? It was his career, and that was just how it was.

We chatted more as we ate. Carter made me laugh because he was Carter and he always did. After dinner we washed the few dishes together, and I realized how good this felt. It was like we’d been doing it for years.

We were just about to settle in on the couch with a show, when Carter’s cell phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and frowned. “It’s my mom.”

My stomach twisted slightly because I knew Carter got nervous when his mom called. He never knew what to expect from her.

“You can go in my room if you want to take it alone.”

He shook his head. “No, it’s fine. I’m sure it’s fine.”

I nodded as he picked up the call. The moment he did, I heard wailing and rushed speech through the phone, but I couldn’t tell what the person was saying.

“Mom…I’m gonna need you to slow down. Take a few breaths. I can’t understand you,” Carter told her.

I stepped closer to him and paused, wanting to support him but not wanting to overstep.

She was speaking so loudly, I could hear her voice as Carter listened. “Wait. He what? Mom—fuck him.”

His skin looked slightly pink, and I could see the panicked look on his face as he began pacing my kitchen. “Mom…I don’t know.” He paused to listen. “I know you need me, but—” More listening. “He did what?” He held the phone and locked eyes with me, and I could see the pain there, twisting around with his anger and confusion. “Mom…I know…fuck, I know. Okay. Shit. I’m sorry. I’ll see what I can do.”

He hung up and turned his back to me, leaning against the counter. “Fuck,” he cursed, and I couldn’t help it anymore. I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around him from behind.

“I’m sorry, baby.”

“You didn’t do anything wrong.”

“That doesn’t mean I can’t be sorry for you. Do you want to talk about it?”
