Robin filled the plates and then carried both to the table. He noticed every now and then she hummed. He didn’t quite catch the tune but he loved the sound coming from her lips. Dylan also noticed there were several pieces of toast on his plate as well. He was starving.

She patted the chair for him to come and sit, and he did. Robin disappeared but came back several seconds later carrying a mug of her own coffee.

“Before I forget,” she said, pushing her chair out and disappearing once again. “I got you a couple of newspapers. I wasn’t sure which one you preferred. You seem like a business and sports kind of a guy, so those are the ones I went for.” She came back with four different kinds of newspapers.

“Wow,” he said.

All four of them were the kinds he read.

“Enjoy.”

She took her seat and he couldn’t help but steal glances toward her as she cut her bacon, scooped up some eggs, and took a bite. He couldn’t help being fascinated by watching her eat.

“You can read the papers. I won’t be upset or offended or anything. Oh, I also got a call from the builder. He’s been delayed so won’t be coming out now until next Friday.” She sighed. “Honestly, I don’t know what is going on right now. I feel like we’re being cursed with this or something.”

Dylan laughed. “There are no such thing as curses.” He loved to read the paper. It was part of his morning routine, but right now, all he wanted to do was watch Robin, talk to her. The papers would just get in the way.

And that was exactly how they spent their first morning—enjoying coffee, talking about the potential work on his home.

He couldn’t help but notice that this was the best morning he’d ever spent with a woman, and yet, he’d not even touched her yet.

Chapter Five

Robin cleaned around her home, very much aware of Dylan on the phone in the dining room. They’d taken Buttercup for a walk and they’d been out for two hours, just talking. She didn’t even know what they’d been talking about. Nothing and everything at the same time.

She had no idea who was on the phone, and she wasn’t going to be rude and listen in on his conversation. It was getting late, and she decided to head into the kitchen to fix them both dinner.

Going to the fridge, she looked at the fresh produce. They had gone grocery shopping that morning, and it was strange as she noticed several people looking their way and whispering. She’d been to the grocery store many times before, many, many times on her own, and she hadn’t heard a single whispered comment.

Halfway through the trip, she had no choice but to escape to the bathroom to check there was nothing flashing or showing. Dylan would have told her if the bottom of her dress had slid into her panties, wouldn’t he? She had to hope he would.

She grabbed several containers of mushrooms, some cheese, and then closed the fridge. Next, she found some shallots and garlic, along with fresh basil. After that, she looked at the bread situation.

There were several crusty rolls, and she got started on those first, slicing them into long oblong shapes. She placed them on a baking tray and drizzled them with a tiny bit of olive oil. The moment she stepped inside the kitchen, she had preheated the oven, and slid that tray right in.

When Dylan stepped into the kitchen, she was slicing the mushrooms. She already had everything prepared inside the processor to make the basil pesto.

“Is everything okay?” she asked, concerned with the frown she saw on his face.

“Yeah, everything is fine. Just…” He stopped and rubbed the back of his head.

“If you don’t want to tell me, you don’t have to. You’re not under any obligation.” She tried to offer him a smile.

“Before the divorce, I knew our anniversary was coming up, and obviously, I didn’t know she was cheating, or that I was going to get a divorce. On that day, she told me she’d love to go to some exotic island, just the two of us. I didn’t get to book it for that year, but I made the arrangements for this year.”

“Ah,” Robin said.

“Yeah, and I was called to confirm my three weeks’ stay, and it’s not refundable.”

“Well, if you go for three weeks, don’t panic, I can take care of everything to do with the house and Buttercup.”

“That’s the thing, er, I asked if I could take Buttercup with me and they said yes, and I was wondering, seeing as we’re both in the same boat, would you like to come with me?”

“You’re inviting me on your anniversary getaway?” Robin asked.

“Yeah, if you don’t mind, that is. I understand if you have something better to do.”
