“There really is nothing that could go wrong if you read the back of the packet.”

“Smart-ass.”

She laughed but closed her eyes, as he then fed her an egg roll, which was also nice. After she tried everything, she was then allowed to open her eyes. The quiches were no good, and they refused to eat them, but they happily ate their way through most of the snacks.

Dylan packed up the food, and once the crumbs were brushed off, they laid against the blankets, just enjoying the sunset. He had a beer, she had a soda, and it was so peaceful.

“This is good,” she said.

“It was the picture of the sunset that made me choose this place.”

“You made the right choice.” She breathed out a sign of relief. “It feels so calm.”

“We’ve got two more weeks to enjoy.”

“You must have loved her,” Robin said. “To have wanted three weeks away with her.”

“I didn’t,” Dylan said. “I told you before, I was just a guy doing the right thing and was taken for a fool.”

“And you never had any feelings for her whatsoever?”

“None. It’s why I bought her the jewelry, the chocolates, and tried to make up for the fact that I didn’t love her, nor did I care about her.”

“Then why did you stay married to her?” she asked.

“Because, she was my wife and I entered that trying to do the right thing, and after I was told she lost the baby, I figured to get rid of her would make me an even bigger asshole, so I stuck around.”

“That makes sense.”

“What about you?” Dylan asked. “Did you ever love your husband?”

“No, I don’t think I did. I mean, I felt so guilty after he proposed. He … I, ugh, I don’t know. I had every intention of calling it off, but it just got bigger and bigger, and before I knew what was happening, the priest was telling us we were husband and wife, and he was to kiss the bride.” She burst out laughing. “I wonder how many brides dread the moment their husband is about to kiss them.” She sighed. “It’s fine.”

“We’re both a couple of fuckups when it comes to relationships,” he said.

“Yep, if you want, you can be the leader.”

He burst out laughing.

“I do think you got the harsher deal out of the two of us,” Robin said.

And he nodded. “You’re right. At least your husband didn’t claim to be pregnant.”

“Did you want kids?” she asked.

His laughter died instantly.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know if that’s crossing any kind of line or anything.”

“I wanted kids,” he said. “Loads of them. A full house. I know it’s not popular or anything, but my parents are gone, and they were only able to have me, and I know they wanted more children. They looked into fostering, but it just never worked. Then they thought about adopting, and my dad got sick. Cancer.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“It’s fine. After Dad died, Mom … I believe she died of a broken heart. She died within a month of him.”

Robin had no idea.

“My dad told me to be honorable. He taught me that a good man would have good things happen to him, and I believed him. So, when a woman I had slept with told me she was pregnant, I believed her. I didn’t make her prove it to me, and I married her as quickly as possible. I thought I was going to eventually fall in love with her. How fucked up is that? But, I also believed that she could help me start my own family.” He shrugged.

“I feel you need something a little stronger than beer.”

Robin gasped as he pulled her underneath him.

“You’re right,” he said. “I need your body, completely naked underneath mine.” He pressed his lips against her neck, and all thought left her mind.

It was on the tip of her tongue to tell him no, that he needed to talk, but then she felt the hardness of his cock press against her core, and she couldn’t think of anything else, all she could do was feel.

He teased the strap of her sundress down her arm, and she moaned as his lips trailed down toward her breast.

“This is all I need, right here,” he said, taking her now free nipple into his mouth, and then sucked it hard.

One week. That was all they had left of their vacation.

Dylan stared down at the bacon sizzling in the pan, and kept looking to see if Robin had gotten up.

Two weeks they had spent together, and they had been the best of his life. He’d never told anyone, not even his ex-wife, about his parents. About how heartbroken he’d felt. After he had taken Robin on the beach, he’d carried her back up to the beach house, and then in the shower, he’d told her that as a young man, losing his parents, he’d felt completely shattered. He had no idea how he was going to carry on. Robin was the first person he’d ever told, and he couldn’t believe he’d shared such a private part of himself.
