“Look, I don’t think we should, you know, be taking this seriously.”

“Why not? Think about it, there have been strange occurrences between us. Have you ever been with me and said things that have kind of made you want to freak out because they were so real and so honest, and you couldn’t help yourself?”

Robin opened her mouth and closed it.

“Yeah, exactly, call me surprised. Think about it, Buttercup gets to your house. I inspected the whole fence. I even got some expert men in to check over the fence, and there is no way she can get to your house, but she finds a way, and trust me, I’ve watched her. She goes to a specific fence and whines, and it takes me looking away, and the next second, she’s gone. I’ve also noticed if you’re not in, she comes back.” He shrugged. “Then, the kitchen. Have you heard any news?”

“No, I’ve been trying to get in touch with the builder but he’s not answering.”

“I wouldn’t bother. He came and told me there was nothing wrong with the wall in my kitchen. The way he explained it there was some kind of scam so they didn’t have to pay or continue the work because the company had declared bankruptcy.”

“Don’t you think this is a little scary?” Robin asked.

“No, I don’t, because this is what I’ve come to know,” he said, moving toward her. He took Buttercup out of her arms and placed her on the floor. Then he held her hands.

She had missed his touch so much. Even though all he was doing was holding her hands, she finally felt … complete. This was crazy, he couldn’t be right, could he?

“Robin Caites, I am completely, one hundred percent in love with you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I don’t care or give a fuck if these houses have brought us together. I know in the week before our vacation, I was falling in love with you, and then those three weeks we had away, where it was just us, I knew there wasn’t a day that would pass where I didn’t want to be with you. I am in love with you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He let go of her hand and stroked her cheek. “You’re mine, and I know this is scary, but I also know that even if we leave here, we’re the ones in control of our destiny. Not these houses, just us. They might have brought us together, but it’s us that will keep us together. Tell me you don’t love me.”

Robin looked into his eyes and knew she couldn’t do it. “I do love you, but don’t you think this is all strange?”

“Isn’t life strange, isn’t it crazy, and insane, and shocking and all of those amazing and wonderful things?” He pulled her in close and she didn’t fight him as he kissed her, slamming his lips down on hers. “I’ve been thinking about kissing you since the last time. I know this is a lot to take in, and I know it requires both of us to have a giant leap of faith, but if you’re willing, Robin, then I’m willing to jump right in. I want you, I want us. I want us to have a family, to build a life together and to finally be happy.”

She watched as he took a deep breath.

“And I promise you there are going to be times that I am grumpy.”

This made her laugh. It was her nickname for him. “You’ll be my grumpy man?”

“I’ll be your grumpy husband, if you’ll marry me?”

She couldn’t help but gasp. Now she was shocked. “You want to … marry me?”

“Yes, I want to have it all with you. I want everything and I don’t want us to waste any time. We’ve already wasted so much of it already. Marry me, Robin.”

She opened her mouth about to respond when there was a knock on the door.

“Don’t open it,” Dylan said.

The knock was persistent. She had every plan to keep that door closed.

“Yes, Dylan Grumpy Greaves, I will marry you.”

“Dylan, open up, I know you’re in there.”

Robin frowned and pulled back, a little shocked by the woman’s voice.

Even Dylan looked toward the door.

“Someone is knocking on my door for you,” she said, feeling a little stupid for stating the obvious.

“I know and I know who it is,” he said.

“Who is it?”

“My ex-wife.”

Chapter Eleven

Robin sat on the grass in the field with Buttercup.

She had been proposed to and her fiancé had also been taken from her in the fact his ex-wife wouldn’t leave, until they talked to each other in private. Dylan had told her he’d be right back.

Buttercup had been left with her, and she’d been whimpering, so Robin had brought her out onto the field to just run, to stretch her legs and soar.
