I do the same. When I can manage it, I crawl to where my sister’s slouched. Touching her neck for a pulse, I can feel she’s still breathing, barely. But she has lost heaps of blood. I look up at Atlas, who walks over to Benji and tries to stop the bleeding, but I know it’s too late. He’s gone almost white.
“Call an ambulance,” I manage to scream at him.
Atlas looks at me, and his eyes are vacant. “This is your fault,” he spits.
I press on my sister’s leg and reach for the blanket on my couch, wrapping it around to stop the bleeding.
“I hope she dies on you, Theadora,” he says, reaching for Benji, picking up his lifeless body and walking out.
I look back, hoping Atlas will come back in, but he doesn’t.
He leaves me sitting on my floor with my dying sister, and a heartbreak that I didn’t know I could possibly feel so strongly.
Atlas did as he said he would.
He’s heartbroken me, so now it’s my turn to heartbreak him.
