“Willow, Willow Garrett,” she replied, and staggered a little. She was more drunk than I originally thought. “So, you will do it?”

“Yes. Yes, I think I will,” I murmured.

“You really mean it? You’ll go with me?” I squealed excitedly, part of me still not quite believing he had said yes.

“Sure, why not? I have nothing better to do this weekend, anyway.”

“Oh my God! Thank you,” I cried breathlessly.

Rex grinned suddenly, and the butterflies in my stomach went crazy. There were no two ways about it. Rex was smoking hot. He had everything I found insanely attractive in a man. Beautiful eyes, a body that clearly saw the inside of a gym a lot, and a slow smile that made my insides swoon.

When his finger grazed my skin something weird happened to me. My breath quickened and my heart started racing like mad. The kind of juvenile reactions I used to have as a teenager when a super cute boy looked at me.

Rex glanced at his watch. “I have to be somewhere else now, but how about dinner tomorrow? We can hammer out our strategy then.”

Wow, he was really serious. “Dinner tomorrow sounds great. Thank you so much. I’ll pick up the tab.”

He frowned slightly, but only said, “Okay. You pick the restaurant then.”

“We could go to the Italian at the end of this street. They do an amazing Ossobuco.”

“Sure. Seven-thirty good for you?”

“Seven-thirty is perfect,” I agreed happily.

“Put my number into your phone and call me if any problems arise.”

I fumbled around in my purse, located my phone, and pulled it out. When I had it open, he called out his number, and I put it into my contacts.

“Now give me a missed call,” he instructed. The way he issued the command gave me the impression he was used to giving orders, and it made me curious about him.

When I heard his phone ring from inside his jacket, I killed the call.

“See you tomorrow,” he said.

Then he was gone.

I stood in the deserted canteen alone, not quite sure if it had all been a dream. Then I looked down at my phone. His number was still there.

I felt as if I had just won the lottery. A lottery called Rex Hunter.

And all that pent up frustration and anxiety came out of me in a rush and I laughed like a demented hyena. No one would feel pity for me with him at the end of my elbow. With a whoop of pure joy, I did a happy dance all around the tables.

Yesssss! I did it. I actually did it! I found a date for the wedding, and what a date I found. I couldn’t wait to see the expression on Tiffany’s face. This was no blue blouse she could rip into two. She would go green with envy. Rex made Steven look like a boy still in schoolboy shorts.

My best impression of an evil laugh reverberated all around the empty room as I practically skipped and danced my way out of there.

What was even better was that he was from a different branch so after our weekend together I never needed to see him again. Perfect. Just perfect.

Yesssss, Willow. You did it, girl. You did it.

Where the devil was I? And why did my head feel like there was a large hammer inside it banging away relentlessly? I cracked one eye open and surveyed my surroundings. I was home in my bed, but the light hurt my eyes, so I shut them immediately. “Owww…”

Yeah, drank too much last night. Suddenly the events of the previous night came to me and I sat bolt upright, both my eyes snapping wide open.

Rex Hunter!

Did that actually happen? I reached for my phone and to my amazement there was a message from him. I opened it:

Table booked at La Chipola 7.30pm. Pls don’t be late.

I fell back on the pillow. Ouch, my head. But even so I couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear. A little body jumped onto the bed and started busily burrowing deeper into the covers. I curled my hands around the wriggling body, brought it close to my face, and inhaled the lovely warm animal scent.

“Oh, Pogo,” I whispered. “I think I solved all our problems.”

He trained his warm chocolate eyes on me and looked pretty happy to hear my news.

“How can you be so beautiful first thing in the morning?” I complained.

He made a small purring sound of pleasure.

“God, how I love you,” I cried and pressed his face next to mine.

It was true. I loved him to bits. He was the only living creature that had never disappointed or hurt me. No human being could ever rival him. Well… maybe Rex, but only because he was so damn fine and was about to solve my biggest problem.

My head was too sore for me to lie around in bed, so I got up and trotted off to the bathroom where I proceeded to swallow a couple of aspirins. By the time I brushed my teeth and took a shower, I felt a whole lot better.
