ISABELLA

I sit across from Matthew, watching him talk over me like I’m not even here. His voice is smooth, but every word that spills out of his mouth grates against my nerves. This restaurant feels suffocating, too expensive for someone like me. The chandelier above glitters like the life I’ll never have, and the fancy place settings make me more uncomfortable than impressed.

Matthew’s words blur as I stare at my lap, trying to quiet the anxiety that’s been buzzing inside me since this morning. The break-in at my apartment was the last straw. I don’t have anywhere else to go, and now, my only refuge—the tiny space I’ve been calling home—is tainted with fear.

I’m stuck. And now I’m here with a man who makes me feel small. Why did I agree to this date?

I glance around the room, desperate for something—anything—to distract me from the knot tightening in my chest.

And then I see him.

Sitting at the bar, alone, a man with dark hair and broad shoulders. His presence is like a storm cloud, drawing attention without trying. He’s dressed in a crisp suit, but there’s nothing stiff about the way he carries himself. He’s powerful, with an air of control that makes everyone else fade into the background. His gaze is intense, locked on me like he’s seeing right through the facade I’ve tried to maintain all night.

I can’t look away. The room seems to disappear, and for a moment, it’s just me and him.

But then Matthew’s voice pulls me back to reality. "You should be grateful I even brought you here," he sneers, his words dripping with arrogance.

Before I can respond, the man from the bar is standing right beside us. He’s even more striking up close—tall, muscular, with a face that looks like it was carved from stone. His dark eyes are focused entirely on me, and I feel something unfamiliar stir inside me. Safety. He feels like safety.

"She’s done with you," he says, his voice calm but commanding.

Matthew bristles. "And who the hell do you think you are?"

The man doesn’t even glance at him. His eyes stay on mine, and something inside me breaks free. "I’m the man who’s taking her away from this."

He holds out his hand, and I take it without a second thought. His grip is firm, reassuring, and I let him lead me out of the restaurant, Matthew’s protests fading into the background.

Outside, a sleek black car is waiting, the door already open. I hesitate, glancing up at the stranger who just pulled me out of a situation I didn’t know how to escape. I should be scared. I don’t know him. But I can’t go back to my apartment tonight. I can’t face the shattered window and the fear of being alone.

“I’m Nathan,” he tells me.

“I’m Isabella.”

“Where do you live?” he asks.

"I—I can’t go back to my apartment," I whisper, my voice breaking. "There was a break-in... I don’t... I don’t feel safe there anymore."

His expression softens, just slightly. "You won’t have to. You’re safe with me now."

I slide into the car, the luxury of it wrapping around me like a protective cocoon. Nathan tells the driver to head home, before sliding in next to me. The door closes behind him. He doesn’t say anything, but there’s something in his gaze that makes me feel like everything is going to be okay.

NATHAN

From the moment I saw her walk into the restaurant with that man, I knew she didn’t belong with him. Her nervous glances, the way she fidgeted with her hands, the way her eyes seemed to dart around the room as if she were looking for an escape—it all told me everything I needed to know. She was out of place in his world, but more than that, she was uncomfortable. Scared.

And beautiful. God, she is beautiful. Soft blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, pale skin that looks so delicate, like I could bruise her with a touch. Her dress hugs her curves in all the right places, and my gaze lingering on the swell of her full breasts, the gentle rise and fall of her chest as she takes shallow breaths.

But it isn’t just her body that captivates me—it is the vulnerability in her eyes. She lookslike she is one wrong move away from breaking. And I want to be the one to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I’ve seen men like him before—entitled, smug, thinking they can buy anything they want, including women. But she wasn’t for sale. Not to him.

While I was still at the bar I watched him belittle her, treating her like she was just another accessory. My blood boiled. There was a time when I might have ignored it, let it slide because it wasn’t my business. But not tonight. Tonight, I felt something primal rise up in me, something possessive.
