“What personal information do you want to offer, Evangeline?” I bite the question out through clenched teeth.

Her eyes lock on mine. “Did Mr. Brewster mention me?”

“Yes,” I answer succinctly. “As a matter of fact, you’re all he talked about.”

She grimaces. “I was afraid of that.”

I push the boundaries of our boss and employee relationship by edging a toe over the line. “Why is that?”

She reaches to scratch the back of her neck. Naturally, the movement of her arm tightens the front of her dress. The material strains as it stretches over her tits.

Her tits.

Magnus has seen them and touched them. It’s highly likely that he sucked on her nipples.

“Did he say we slept together?” she asks.

Not sure I can form a verbal response, I nod.

She lets out a long sigh. “We didn’t. I would never sleep with someone like him.”

At least a few questions are begging to be asked in response to what she just said, but I go for the one that I need an answer to now. “You didn’t sleep with him?”

She visibly shudders. “God, no. He’s so not my type, but he was bragging about a woman on the subway one morning. Julie was her name. He was just going on and on about how he fucked her.”

I stare at her in shocked silence. Hearing her talk about fucking, even though it’s related to Brewster and another woman, is enough to send my pulse racing.

“I’m sorry,” she apologizes meekly. “That word slipped out, but it was a word he used repeatedly on the subway that morning.”

She’s on a roll, and I’m not about to get in her way, so I remain silent as she goes on, “I heard him on the phone…well, everyone on the train that morning heard him talking to someone about how Julie screamed as he was nailing her. It was disrespectful. I don’t know who Julie is, but if I were her I wouldn’t want a bunch of strangers knowing that I came over and over.”

She lets out a light laugh. “Mind you, Mr. Brewster is the one claiming she had a bunch of orgasms. I just couldn’t take it, so I told him…”

“You told him what?” I push as her voice trails off.

“I recognized his voice because he had called the office wanting to talk to you a few months ago, so I tossed out his name and then told him we fucked once and that he wasn’t good in bed.”

I laugh out loud.

“Again, excuse my language, sir, but someone had to put him in his place.” Smiling, she shakes her head. “I’m not even sure Julie is a real person, but if she is, I hope she appreciates what I did.”

“I’m sure if she’s real, she does.”

Her eyes light up. “Mr. Brewster didn’t tell you all of that earlier when you saw him, did he?”

I shake my head. “He told me he fucked you and he wanted another round.”

Her mouth twists into a scowl. “No to all of that. Sleeping with Magnus Brewster is on my never-going-to-happen list. I wouldn’t even kiss a man like him.”

“Would you kiss a man like me?” I blurt out.

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Evie

No, I didn’t just hear what I think I did.

There’s no way Mr. Hunt just asked me if I’d ever kiss a man like him.

A few weeks ago, my answer would have been a very loud and instant, “No!”

Now, I’m not sure. His lips seem like they’d be very kissable. They’re full, just the right shape, and a shade of pink that is so tempting.

“What was that?” I ask him to repeat what he actually said because it could have been work related and I’m not about to break my streak of being the best executive assistant this company has ever seen.

He steps closer to me, but before he can say a word, the door to his office flies open, and his former executive assistant rushes in.

Great timing, as usual, Norbeta.

In her hands is a plate of cookies. From where I’m standing, they look like chocolate chip. They smell like they spent too much time in the oven.

I’ve sampled enough of Norbeta Pittman’s cookies to know that I shouldn’t do that ever again.

“Evie!” she greets me happily. “I brought you both a treat.”

“Great,” I say with as much exuberance as I can muster for over baked cookies. “I’ll take one to go.”

I don’t have to say another word because Norbeta picks up the biggest one on the plate and offers it to me.

I accept with a nod of gratitude. “Thank you.”

“Enjoy every last bite,” she suggests. “I need to speak to the handsome grouch alone if that’s okay.”

Every time she comes to the office, she has a choice word to describe Reid. It’s always prefaced with a compliment like it was today.

Handsome grouch.

Smart grump.

Business-savvy crab.

I’ve always assumed she gets away with it because Reid has a soft spot for her. It’s hard to imagine her sprinting around the city trying to complete any of the ridiculous task lists he’s handed me. That’s not to say that I don’t think Norbeta could get it done in record time. I know she could. I just don’t think Reid was ever as hard on her as he is on me.
