“Are you staring at my chest?”

I nod without glancing at her face. “Sure am.”

“Sometimes I think you’re doing that at the office, but you cover it up so well.” Her finger finds my chin to tilt it slightly until our gazes meet. “Do you stare at me at work?”

“Every chance I get,” I admit.

“Since when?” The question leaves her with a hint of amusement wrapped around it.

“The day I hired you,” I answer honestly. “I actually considered not hiring you because you’re so beautiful.”

Her hand slides to my shoulder. She holds it there, touching my bare skin, igniting a fresh fire of need within me. “Really, Reid?”

The fact that she’s questioning it only adds to how alluring she is. I’ve known for a long time that she doesn’t quite understand how breathtaking she is. Everything about her is irresistible, including the way she taps her finger on her forehead when she’s deep in thought.

I drag her hand to the center of my chest so she can feel the thunder of my heart. “Really.”

She stares into my eyes. “You did hire me, though.”

“After I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t touch you.” I chuckle because that promise has been shattered into a million small pieces tonight.

Her gaze drops to where my hand is touching her waist. “You’re touching me now.”

“I want more,” I confess because if the need in my kiss isn’t proof of that, my raging hard-on is.

These swimming trunks are too tight to confine my erection. I’m aching, and I can’t say it’s all in the best way. “Come to my room, Evangeline.”

Her lips part slightly, but not a sound leaves her. Instead, it’s her eyes that give away everything she’s feeling. They lock on mine.

I slide my hand along her arm until I feel her palm in mine again. “Let’s go.”

Her feet stay firmly planted in the sand even as I tug on her hand. “What about…”

“Monday?” I jump in and finish her question, or what I think is her question.

She shakes her head slightly. “No, but that’s a good point.”

Leave it to me to make a good point at the worst fucking time. I try to recover from that by pushing her to finish her actual question. “What were you going to ask? What about what?”

Chewing on the corner of her bottom lip, she completely ignores what I just said. “I wasn’t even thinking about Monday, but we need to consider it. I’m glad you brought it up because nothing will be the same at the office if we do this.”

I ignore all of that because she has a good point, but I don’t want to talk about that or anything. I want to bury my face in her pussy. I want to spread her legs and fuck her until she comes and then comes again.

“To answer your question, I was going to ask about protection.” She adds a soulless laugh to that. “It felt important thirty seconds ago, but we need to stop and think about work before this goes any further.”

Condoms. She was about to ask me about condoms.

I was so close to fucking this beauty, and I messed it all up because I have no goddamn patience.

“Evie!” Charlotte’s voice calls through the darkness. “You’re missing! Where are you?”

“I’m here,” Evangeline whispers so softly there’s no way in hell Charlotte can hear it.

I skim the pad of my thumb over her bottom lip. I may never get another chance to be this close to her again, so I intend to savor these last few seconds before the bride-to-be interrupts us.

“One last kiss,” she says. “Please. Before she gets here.”

I’ve rushed through many kisses before with other women, but I know this will be one I’ll never want to end. Still, I cup her face in my hands and kiss her softly. It’s so gentle that she whimpers.

“Evie!” Charlotte’s voice is closer, louder, and more frantic. “I hope you haven’t drowned.”

I pull back to gaze down at her. “I’ll head out so she doesn’t ask a million questions you don’t want to answer.”

“Okay.” She nods.

Reluctantly, I let go of her and take off in a sprint to the left and into the darkness so Charlotte will find Evie alone on the beach.

CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE

Evie

Logic will never get you laid.

That piece of advice came from my sister when I was in high school. Tracey stopped by our folks’ home one Saturday night to find me with my nose buried in a history book. I was cramming for an exam the following week.

Since one of her friends was the older sister of one of my friends, Tracey knew a party was happening at the house of one of the wealthiest families in town.

She told me to ditch the book, dress in something that would turn heads, and march down to the party.
