I giggle along with her this time before ending our conversation with a brief confession. “It wasn’t at our building.” I don’t just feel a little dirty sharing intimate details while being eyeballed by people suspicious as to how I got a promotion, but Jack also mentioned that he likes to keep his work and home life separate. “But I think it was a one-time-only deal anyway.”

“Sure it was,” Jess mumbles with a roll of her eyes before she bumps me with her hip. “Let’s see if that remains the case by the end of the day because from what I’m seeing, he looks ready to devour you alive.”

My heart beats at an irregular patter when she nudges her head to Mr. Potts’s old office. I don’t need to peer in her direction to know who’s watching. The prickling of the hairs on my arms tells me everything I need to know. Jack has arrived. You just wouldn’t know it since his Mr. Carson mask is firmly slipped into place.

My eyes shift to Jess when she mutters, “Lunch?”

“Yes. That will be great.”

After a quick exhale, I signal that we will catch up later before I spin on my heels and head Jack’s way. His long drink-in of my body continues during the short trek.

“Good morning, Mr. Carson,” I greet, my voice a seductive purr.

“Octavia,” he replies, his greeting just as throaty. “I believe we have some matters to discuss this morning. Would you like to do it here or in your new office?”

I slant my head then arch a brow. “I have a new office?”

Even with his aura exuding wealth and superiority, his smile draws in spectators like a lion tamer at a circus. “Yes. Shall I show you where it is?”

I nod before my head can talk my heart out of it.

With a smile solely reserved for me, Jack advises Elaine he will be back shortly before he places his hand on my back and guides me toward the elevators.

“Is it not on the same floor as everyone else?”

Dark strands of hair fall into Jack’s mesmerizing eyes when he briskly shakes his head. After checking that the coast is clear, he leans in close, then mutters in my ear, “Seventeen floors will never be enough.”

My knees pull together when a shudder of arousal shakes my thighs.

His voice couldn’t be more provocative if he tried.

While snickering at my response to his tease, he guides me into the idling elevator, then pushes the button for the top level. Only the hobnobs work from the top floor, but I’m too stunned to say anything. Not only am I in a teeny tiny little space with a man who activates every one of my hot buttons by only breathing, but we’re also not alone.

Roach is in the elevator with us, and although he appears to be glancing at the tablet balancing on his hand, I’ve spotted the occasional flick of his eyes. He’s watching me as attentively as Jack.

“Ja… ah, Mr. Carson, have you met Terry Roach, Head of Advertising?”

Jack shakes his head before offering his hand to Terry. “Jack. Pleasure.”

“I can say the same. I’ve been going over records this morning. The amount of capital you’re willing to put into this sinking ship is quite commendable. That or you’re a fool.”

I scorn him with an evil glare, but Jack merely laughs. “Depends. If that capital isn’t close to one-ten-thousandth percent of your total net wealth, I doubt you’d class it as a risk.”

Jack’s reply shuts Roach up quickly. He stammers over his words before he scurries out of the elevator on the next floor. It isn’t the floor advertising is on, but the stuffiness in the elevator is too much for him to bear.

He should consider himself lucky to have escaped the inferno with only the slightest scald. The temperature jumps tenfold within a second of the doors snapping shut. Jack doesn’t waste any time pinning me to the elevator wall with his suit-covered body and sealing his mouth over mine.

His kiss is scrumptious and confusing at the same time. You can’t demand anonymity at work, then kiss me senseless in the elevator. Besides, isn’t there a security officer manning the live feed?

“Jack,” I mumble against his mouth when he pulls back for the quickest breather. “We shouldn’t be doing this here. Someone might see us.”

“They won’t,” he promises before he nips at my lower lip then soothes the sting of his bite with a lash of his tongue. “The elevators are programmed to go straight to the top floor, and I paid the security personnel to turn a blind eye.”

His reply both excites and confuses me. Last night he pushed me away, but today, he’s pulling me in like he can’t breathe without me.

While returning his toe-curling embrace, I endeavor to relieve some of my confusion. “How was your meeting this morning?”
