A For Sale sign went up a few houses down from Achilles’s place and I decided to jump on it. It’s a nice house with way more room than I need. It’s located close enough to the airport for me to travel in and out without stress.
Something I’ll be doing a lot of with the business. I go to explain this to him, but he’s focused on his phone, so I don’t bother. This is what I want. I don’t have to explain myself anyway.
“Look, I can’t even find a Starbucks around here. There isn’t one for fifteen miles. You know what that means, don’t you?”
“Fuck off,” I scoff.
“I don’t understand you. Take the gift your grandfather is placing in your hands and kill your father. Boom, all your problems solved, and I won’t have to come visit you in this hole.”
“Whatever.” I wave him off.
“On second thought, there isn’t one piece of ass who will want to come here. Go on, buy it. Heather, Holly, Helen.” He snaps as he tries to remember my realtor’s name. “Can you put in an offer for my boy?”
My realtor appears with a smile on her face. She reminds me of my third-grade teacher. She was always so nice to me. Mrs. Berk, I’ll never forget her.
“Harmony, actually. I have a few places I still want to look at. I’ll give you a call by the end of the day tomorrow.”
“Okay, no problem. Let me know if you have any further questions. I wouldn’t wait too long. This one is going to have a bidding war if we don’t act fast.”
Jeff snorts. “Like they’d be able to outbid him. He’s lucky, but not that damn lucky. He’ll buy this shithole if he wants it.”
I ignore him as he murmurs under his breath. It’s not a shithole at all. Everything is new. There are five bedrooms, four baths, and a nice basement for a massive man cave—or other extracurricular activities—if I wanted.
The truffled ceilings and built-ins add charm and character to the common area and the open floor plan is nice. It’s a lot more than I was expecting.
“Being that they knocked down the former structure to create this larger new build, it’s a hot find and in such a nice up-and-coming neighborhood,” Harmony says. “You’ll have the newest and biggest lot and house on the block.”
“Then you buy it,” Jeff mutters.
I roll my eyes and shake my head. I have no idea what his problem is today. He’s acting like a brat who needs to be fed and put down for a nap.
“Thank you for your time, Harmony. I’ll get back to you as soon as I make a decision.”
I like the place, but I don’t want to come off as too eager. It’s the perfect home for a middle-class family. I’ll be proud to say I bought it on my own, with my own money.
Since it’s my own money, I do need to think about the cost for once in my life. I’ve always dreamed of someday being able to do this. Buying a home of my own and my father having nothing to do with it.
We walk out to Jeff’s waiting SUV and climb in. I check my phone for missed calls. I’ve been hoping to hear from Shawna.
“This place, a trip to Cancun, and you’re looking at a new car. Basil must have come through. Does that mean you’re taking the lead too?”
“My grandfather has nothing to do with any of it. I’m a grown man. I know how to take care of myself. I’ve figured it out. I’ll be fine.”
He holds his hands up. “Fine, say no more. It’s good to see you back. Lunch is on you.”
Chapter 15
Asshole’s Retreat
Kelex
Three weeks later…
These Asshole trips are starting to grow on me. I’ve laughed more than I have in months. Skittles is great at booking the best spots.
However, I’m not going to lie. I was happy to hear Shawna got a job but disappointed big-time that she couldn’t make the trip. I should’ve asked for her number. I thought she would’ve called by now.
“Decorating your new place is going to be so much fun,” Skittles says as she comes out with two drinks in her hands.
“Yeah, I’m kind of excited,” I admit.
I take a glass and sip at it. The bartender we hired has a heavy hand. We’re all going to be lit within the hour.
Tak zips by on an ATV as Pit and Deacon chase after him. I guarantee he’s done something to one of them. The pranks have been A1 so far.
Luke is still stewing over his missing eyebrows. Pit was so drunk last night he now has painted toes and fingernails. My favorite by far was Skittles getting Tak to wet the bed.
I’m never shutting my eyes around this woman. She’s a little evil genius. It’s the crazy laugh for me.
