“I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
“Sure you don’t. I like it when she’s texting you. It’s when I see you the happiest.”
“Yo,” Pit calls as he comes over with an arm around Kid’s neck.
She works at his bar, but they seem to be good friends. I don’t think he’s fucking her. From the way that one chick is staring over at Pit, I think Kid’s throwing him a lifeline.
“What’s up? You heading out?”
“Nah, just needed to get away from that nutjob. Her breath smells like shit and she won’t take no for an answer. She has two options at this point. Leave me the fuck alone or I’m going to spend the next hour flaming her ass,” he replies.
“Dude, I’m always game for a good cracking session. The way those shoes are leaning, we can take shifts,” I chuckle.
“Poor thing,” Kid snickers.
“Poor thing, my ass. That’s the same one I caught being nasty to some other girls for no reason earlier. I should’ve put her out then. I have no mercy for that shit.”
Pit snorts. “The nerve, breath smelling like the crack of a bum’s ass and she was nasty to someone. Yeah, I’m going in if she comes over here again.”
“I’m here for it,” I croon.
“Hey, guys,” Achilles says as he joins our group.
I note that his attention is on Kid. I smile. She’s a pretty one. I caught him checking her out at the bar a few times.
“Yo, I wanted to thank you for the update on my POS system. You saved me some cash and things have been running a lot smoother,” Pit says to Achilles.
“No problem. Let Josh know if you ever need anything else. I’ll be happy to help.”
“I’m going to take you up on that. I want to put in a system to watch and run the entire place from one screen in the back. The front of house, the card room, everything.”
“I can set that up for you. That’s simple,” he says.
“Kid, have you met my boy Achilles?” I ask.
“No, I don’t think I officially have.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” he says, holding out his hand.
“Your name is really Kid?” Jeff asks as he enters the conversation.
“No, but it’s what I go by.”
“Did you go to our high school? I know you from somewhere,” he says as he narrows his eyes.
She shrugs her shoulders and turns back to Achilles. Just when I go to pull Jeff’s coattails so my boy Achilles has a shot, the chick with the leaning shoes brings her ass over. I grin as I see Pit home in.
She comes closer and shoves Kid and Skittles out of the way to get next to him. Oh yeah. It’s roasting time.

“Hold on, baby,” Joshua says into the phone. “Now, back to you, dead gums.
“What the fuck did you eat, the inside of a dog’s ass? Your breath smells like three-week-old garbage and your hair looks like you were rolling under your bed right before you walked out of the house tonight.”
I pull the phone from my ear to make sure I dialed the right number. I’ve never heard Josh talk to anyone like this before. I blink at the phone a few times as the roar of laughter comes through.
Good thing the device isn’t next to my ear. They are all so loud. I forgot he was having a party tonight.
I press my ear back to the phone right as a girl replies. “You’re both assholes.”
“And you’re thirsty as fuck, Garbage Pail Mouth,” another guy says. “How many ways do you want me to say I’m not interested?”
“This party blows anyway,” the girl huffs.
“That’s cool, but you can take them turnover shoes and skate your ass right out of my house, Kickstand Feet.”
“Oh,” the crowd roars.
“Oh shit, look at her shoes,” someone in the background says, causing more laughter.
“Gorgeous, you there?”
“Um, yeah. Is everything all right?”
“Yeah, just had to put out the trash.”
“I forgot about your party. I was only calling to say hi before I call it a night.”
“Don’t worry about it. This has been pretty lame anyway. I’d much rather talk to you,” he says.
“You have guests. I can call back later.”
“Hang up and I’m coming to Australia. You put a smile on my face, so I’m told. I need to smile right now. Talk to me, baby girl. How are you?”
I bite my lip. I’m so tempted to hang up, so he’ll show up here, although I wouldn’t know what to do if he did. Not wanting to embarrass myself, I burrow under my covers and answer him.
“I’m great. This week has been awesome. I can’t believe it will be over soon.”
“Where to next?”
“How do you know I’m not coming home?”
“I see you. You’re on fire. They’re not letting you go this soon.”
“Japan,” I sigh. “Can you believe that?”
