“Then you eat it. See you later.”

* * *

“You want to talk about it?” Jeff asks as we wait for all the drivers to arrive for this race.

We’re both posted up against my ride as the party around the track comes to life. There’s something different in the air tonight. I’ve asked myself several times why I’m even out here.

“No, not really. Although I know you’re going to stay up my ass until I do.”

“As long as it doesn’t stink, I’ll stick my nose in it.”

I turn to glare at him. “Why are we friends?”

“My father and your father are connected to the same shit. I took pity on you when they forced us to play with each other. You’ve been my bestie since. Come on, sweetheart, tell Daddy what’s the matter,” he says and pokes out his lip.

I frown as I think of that day all those years ago. It was the same day I found out the kind of savage my father is and the life he thought he was going to force me into. I blink away the memory of all the blood and the dying man moaning for mercy and his life.

Shaking my head clear, I focus back on Jeff. “You’re an ass.”

“Maybe, but I’m your ass. What’s up?”

“I overheard my father talking to someone about all this Vander bullshit,” I say low enough for only him to hear.

“Okay.”

“I’m still not doing it. If he wants control of Vander, he’ll have to earn it on his own.”

“What’s so bad about having it all? You’re being offered a chance to take over a city and the town connected to it. So what if it’s covered in blood? I know you’re capable of doing this. Why piss it all away?”

“Because it’s bullshit and I don’t want the blood on my hands. Listen to you. You sound like him. People aren’t things for us to step on like some fucking gods.

“There isn’t enough money in the world for me to agree to be like him. I’ll earn my own way if I have to. I don’t need that life,” I seethe.

“Calm down. God forbid life gets any easier for you. Besides, that pretty face is going to open the world to you as it is. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”

“Fuck off. Walk a mile in my shoes, then talk shit to me.”

“Hell, if I walked in your shoes, I’d take the promotion. I’d want it all. I’d be the one running this shit and they’d all bow down to me.”

I snort. “And if it all turned out to be a load of shit?”

“If I couldn’t run it all, I’d burn it all down.”

I stop and look at Jeff. I mean, really look at him. There’s something in the way he says it that strikes differently. It’s not the first time I’ve heard him say something like it. He can be a bit of a spoiled asshole.

He smiles at me and laughs it off. “Bro, there’s a race to be had. Forget all that shit,” he croons and pats my cheek. “Look, there’s some ass over there I want to get in. I’ll be back before the flag is down.”

“Yeah, right, have at it.”

I sit on the hood of my car with my arms folded across my chest. I look off in the direction Jeff just took off in. However, the crowd is so heavy tonight I can’t see where he disappeared to.

He won’t be back. Instead of searching for him, I lock in and focus on the race ahead. I look around at the other drivers. While this is a sport to me, some of these guys need the money.

No matter what, I’m here to have a good time, but I’m never a loser. I always come out on top. A good race and a pretty face in my passenger seat at the end is a total win for me. Someone’s face is going to be in my mattress by the end of the night.

I need to fuck away the bullshit in my life. A crime boss, me? My father has lost his Greek mind. Even with control over all of Vander and Bridge Lake, I’m not interested.

“Don’t even bring your ass over here. You’re nowhere near pretty enough for me to fuck you,” I scoff at the skinny chick about to try to throw herself at me. “Not happening.”

The smile on her pale face crumbles. “Asshole.”

“Still not fucking you.” I shrug.

Don’t get me wrong, I love girls of all colors, shapes, and sizes. This one, however, looks like she’s trying to fuck her way to a check. That’s not attractive to me and never has been.

I might have overlooked her too-big ears if she didn’t have that hungry look in her eyes. Ignoring the thirsty girl and her friends, I do another pass of the crowd. I tilt my head when my eyes land on the new girl.
