“You knew a different version of him.”
“And now?”
I nod. “He’s a good guy.”
“I don’t need to ask if he makes you happy. I can see it written all over your face.”
“He’s my boss. Well, he might not be much longer if I get this job.”
“Tell me about the job.”
I tell her about my interview and how excited and hopeful I am that the job is mine. “That’s really my biggest reservation of giving everything I am to this thing with Spencer.”
“You mean your boyfriend. Your relationship.”
“Yeah, that.” We both laugh at my reply.
“You’ll get the job, Charlotte. There is no way they’ll pass you up. And you’ve already got the man. I’m so happy for you.”
“I really like him,” I confess softly.
“He’s crazy about you.”
“What?” I ask, raising my brow. “You can’t know that.”
“He watches you, Charlotte. He’s always watched you. When you’re not looking, he is. I have a good feeling about this. Wedding bells and all the things.” She smiles.
“I’m sorry.”
“Hey, you have nothing to be sorry for. I want you to be happy. Linc made a hard choice, but it was the right one. This thing with you and Spencer is separate. And when it’s time for me to stand at your wedding, and Linc is there, even if I have to walk down the aisle with him, it will be okay. I don’t hate him. I probably should, but I don’t have it in me. I’m thankful he ended things. Sure, I wish it would have been sooner, but everything happens for a reason.”
“What’s that look in your eye?” I ask her.
She shrugs. “I’m not ready to talk about it, but when I am, you are the first person I’ll come to.”
“I love you, Audrey.”
“I love you too.”
CHAPTER
EIGHTEEN
Spencer
My house is quiet. Too damn quiet. She was here for not even forty-eight hours, and already this place isn’t the same without her. Something else that’s not the same? My ability to sleep. I can smell her on my sheets, and my arms ache to hold her. It’s Thursday night, and I’ve not laid eyes on her since Monday.
Monday night, she had a night in with her sister. Tuesday night, they went to a yoga class. I begged her to let me come and watch. She declined, so she’s going to have to do it here so I can watch. I’ll do what I can to convince her.
Last night she had a doctors’ meeting. They meet after hours to keep from taking away from patient appointments. I get it. I think it’s a great idea, and I’m impressed that they’re that focused on patient care to not want to take that time from them. They’re also keeping me from my girl, so I’m a little salty, but if I take Charlotte out of the equation, I commend them.
That brings us to tonight. She’s coming to my place tomorrow after work. I convinced her to spend the weekend with me, but she countered that she needed tonight to do laundry because she’s not been able to catch up this week from being at my place all last weekend.
I can’t go another night tossing and turning. I need sleep. I need Charlotte, so that’s why I’m here right at six with two pizzas and an overnight bag, and tomorrow’s suit tossed over my shoulder. She can’t come to me, but I can come to her. I don’t know how she’s going to take it. There’s a good chance she’s going to tell me to take my ass home, but I won’t know unless I try. My hands are full, so I use my elbow to hit the doorbell.
The door opens, and it’s Audrey who greets me. “Fancy seeing you here.” She grins.
“I brought dinner,” I tell her as I hand her the pizzas. Charlotte told me that she informed Audrey about the details of our relationship earlier this week, and she’s team Spencer and Charlotte. Not that I thought she wouldn’t be after I made her breakfast. My cooking skills are on point. I’m thankful. It was hard enough winning over one of the Krause women. I couldn’t imagine having to convince both of them I’m what’s best for her. I’d do it, but I’m thankful that I don’t need to.
“She doesn’t know you’re coming, does she?”
“Nope.” I hope they haven’t had dinner yet.
“We were just discussing what we were going to have for dinner. You’re right on time.”
“Perfect.”
Her eyes flash to my overnight bag and suit, but she says nothing. She doesn’t need to. The smirk pulling at her lips says it all. “Come on in, Spence.” She steps back and allows me to enter. “She’s in her room. She’s in the shower.”
Now it’s me who smirks. I drop a kiss on her cheek and take off down the hall. I knock on the door, but there’s no answer. Trying the knob, I find it unlocked. Of course it is. This is her home, and the only one here is her sister. At least, that’s what she assumes. The shower is going, and I grin. Quickly, I strip out of my clothes, rush over to the door, and turn the lock before sneaking into the bathroom. Her shower isn’t as big as mine at home, but we’ll fit. I pull back the curtain, and she yelps. Her mouth drops open when she sees me.
