“This is a friend of mine, Heathcliff,” Van Helsing says, gesturing to the surly vampire.
“Heathcliff…?” I prod for a last name.
“Just Heathcliff,” the vampire grumbles. Thankfully he doesn’t offer to shake hands because I don’t think I’d take him up on it. Van Helsing I trust, but this vampire seems to have all his demons along for the ride.
“Heathcliff with no first name and no last name, I understand,” I say, flashing him a smile that only seems to anger him, before Kat and Brom introduce themselves.
We don’t hang out in the vampires’ corner very long, in fact with most people at this party being witches, the blood-suckers are given a wide berth, and soon we’re all taking our places at the dinner table, waiters bring out enough food and drink to serve an entire village.
“I’d like to propose a toast,” Dorian says, standing at the head of the table and raising his glass. “To the newest members of the mystic society, Ichabod Crane, Katrina Crane, and Brom Bones. May you always feel welcome in this house, may it be your shelter against the world that can’t even begin to understand you. But here, in the mystic society, we do.”
“Hear hear,” people cheer, tapping their knifes on their glasses before we all take our drink.
The bubbles feel warm going down and I glance at my lovers on either side of me, putting one of my hands on top of Kat’s leg and the other going on top of Brom’s, anchoring us together.
Dorian Gray might think his society is a shelter from the world at large, but I have my own shelter right here. I have my pretty boy and my sweet witch, and it’s in loving them both that I truly know I’m home.
And I’m finally safe.
