“Nobody smells like Harley does. The strawberry scent of her hair, her soft vanilla scented skin, and my personal favorite, her cherry lips.”

“You fuckin’ liar!” she yelled, trying to knee me in the balls.

“For fuck’s sake, relax!” I ordered, trying to block her assault and the sound of Cash’s voice in my head.

“You disgust me! I can’t believe you! Just two hours ago you were tellin’ me you were a virgin and wanted to save it for someone special!”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Yes, you did!”

The quicksand of her accusations dragged me under. I held onto her arms firmer, steadying my composure as best as I could.

It didn’t help.

Every excuse.

Every explanation.

Every lie...

I told myself.

Engulfed me, hurting me in ways I assumed I just hurt her.

The biggest problem in my life was I was impulsive, acting on feeling alone.

“Harley, don’t put words in my mouth. I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Fine! Then let me go!”

There was nothing left for me to say, except the truth. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You didn’t hurt me! I fuckin’ hate you!”

I winced, hearing her say those words for what felt like the hundredth time, but for the first time...

It felt like she meant them.

“It’s not what you think,” I stated, wanting her to understand it wasn’t.

“Really? ’Cuz it sure as shit looked like you were fuckin’ her!”

“I was.”

“Ugh!” she shouted at my blatant display of honesty. “Let go of me!”

She was missing the point.

“It was just a fuck! What’s your problem?”

“Fuck you!”

“Do what you do best, Pierce, go push her away some more. ’Cuz let me tell ya, nothin’ tastes better than kissin’ away her tears.”

I couldn’t help myself, I never could. “What? You gonna go find Cash, baby girl?”

“Leave him out of this! This has nothin’ to do with him!”

“That’s where you’re wrong.”

He was the reason I was in this fuckin’ mess. Goddamn pussy boy.

The next thing I knew, she ripped her arms out of my strong grip. “I fuckin’ hate you. I believed you. I wanted to believe you. I thought...” She shook her head, holding back the tears. “I mean ... I just thought ... you were talkin’ about me in there...”

Was I talking about her?

When did our hate become so fuckin’ confusing?

“I never wanna speak to you again. If you come near me, I swear I’ll tell my father anythin’ to make you go away for good. I hope she was worth it, ’cuz you lost me. Your fuckin’ play toy!”

I was about to tell her she couldn’t have been more wrong.

She may have been a lot of things, though play toy was never one of them. At least not the way she was implying.

Never did I expect her to reveal, “Remember your question on the roof after your mom’s funeral? What else had your mom given me? Well here’s your answer. She gave me this before she died.” In an instant, she pulled out what looked like an envelope from her purse.

“She said I was the only one she trusted to give it to you when the time was right. But I never plan to speak to you again! So here you go, asshole!”

“The fuck?” I breathed out, blown away by what she just shared.

It wasn’t until she slapped the envelope on my chest, announcing, “Here are the results of your DNA Dementia test.”

That she killed a huge part of me...

I could never hide from.

Chapter 4

<>Jackson<>

Now: Twenty-five-years-old

“Dadda! Dadda! Dadda!” Bay shouted, loud and fuckin’ clear at the ass crack of dawn.

Our baby girl’s favorite morning routine consisted of seeing how early she could wake me up.

Do you think she ever did this to her mother?

Fuck no.

“Hey, baby,” I groaned, stirring awake. Quickly feeling little fingers opening my eyes for me.

“Dadda, you sweepin’?”

“Not anymore.”

“Did you have a bad dweam?”

“No, baby. Only good dreams, of you.”

“That’s ’cuz I’m your pwincess.”

“That’s right.”

“Dadda, you gotta open your eyes if yous awake.”

“They’re open.”

“Nah uh, wook.” She let go of my eyelids, and they closed. “See...”

“Bailey, is it still dark out?”

“Shhh ... the sun still sweepin’.”

“Maybe you should be sleeping too?”

“I ain’t tiwed no more.”

“You’re not tired anymore?”

“Dats what I said.”

I chuckled, I couldn’t help it. She was as adorable as she was a pain in my ass. Exactly like her mother.

“Baby, where’s Momma?”

“She ain’t here. Wook.”

My eyes fluttered open, finding her side of the bed empty and cold. It wasn’t unusual to find her missing before I woke up. That was if she even slept next to me at all. My gaze shifted toward the clock on the nightstand that read a little past six in the morning.

“Bay, it’s still dark out, baby.

“Da sun must be sweepy den ’cuz time to get up.”

“How about we just do lovies for a little while?” I suggested her term for cuddling.

She narrowed her mischievous stare at me, contemplating if this was a trick or not.
