“Bryson City Veterinarian Clinic.”
I grip my cell a little tighter. When I saw Mattie—or at least the man who looks just like him—I could only make out enough of the faded lettering on the van to know it was a veterinarian transport. I asked the people at the store where I saw it, but they wouldn’t give me any information. So, I’ve been using Google. There are fifteen vets in and around Bryson City. I’m currently on call number nine. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I hit fifteen. It will either be time to give up or expand my search. I haven’t decided which I’m going to do.
“Hello, I was hoping you could help me. I was in town yesterday around noon at the local Bar-B-Que Shack …”
“That place has great pulled pork,” the receptionist says.
“It really does. I’m not from around here. My boyfriend and I are just traveling through. We enjoyed it, but anyway, I’m afraid when I backed out, I accidentally hit a transport van. I didn’t really see any damage at all, but when I got back to the hotel, I noticed my taillight was cracked. I’m going to have to get it replaced through my insurance. Like I said, there was no damage on the other car, but I was afraid the insurance may contact them. So, I was trying to track it down. The only thing I read on the side of the van indicated it belonged to a vet. Unfortunately, there are a lot of vets in this area. So, I’m not sure if I have the right one.”
“I’m afraid you don’t. Our vet only has a truck. I think I know who you are talking about though.”
“You do?” I ask, struggling to keep the excitement out of my voice.
“I think so. Indy Shelton has a van like that. She runs a small clinic off her farm. I have her phone number if you want it. You can call and talk to them.”
“Oh my God, that would be so awesome. Thank you so much! You don’t know how much I appreciate this.”
“No worries. I’ll even give you directions to her place if you want. That way, you can go by and talk to her in person while you’re in town.”
“You’re an angel. I don’t know how to thank you.”
“No worries,” she laughs. I write down the number and directions she gives me and for the first time since my brother and Diego were ambushed, I feel hope. I say my goodbye and click off the phone, jumping up from the bed with a squeal of victory.
“What’s going on with you?” Tor asks, coming out of the bathroom. I hadn’t even realized he’d come in. He must have while I was on the phone and just didn’t want to disturb me.
“I found the vet that owns the van I saw Mattie in yesterday,” I tell him.
“Baby—”
I hold up my hand to stop him. “Don’t even start. I know what you said, but I think you’re all wrong. That was Mattie, and I’m going to prove it.”
“I just don’t want you to get your hopes up and get hurt again,” he cautions. I walk into his arms and let him pull me close. It always helps center me to have his arms around me. I pull back and he smiles down at me. I see the sadness in his eyes, but he’s fighting showing it. He doesn’t want me to see it.
“Tor, I’m okay. I’m telling you that’s Mattie.”
“And if it’s not, baby?”
“Then I won’t be hurting any more than I already am.”
“What do you want from me?” he asks, fingering the delicate chain of my collar.
“How would you feel about taking a ride out to Indy Shelton’s animal clinic?”
“Maybe you could talk me into it,” he croons.
“Are you seriously asking for sex when I should be driving out to the clinic?” I laugh.
“It’s lunchtime. The clinic will probably be closed. You have ten minutes to suck your man off like a good little girl.”
“Ten minutes? You don’t have stamina to last longer than that? Did I wear you out too much last night?”
“You’re such a brat. For that, I’m going to tie you to the bed and not let you come for hours.”
“You like that I’m a brat.”
“Get on your knees and show me just how much you appreciate the patience I show you,” he growls, the sound vibrating through me.
I drop down slowly, holding his gaze. “Yes, sir,” I whisper, hiding my smile when I see the way his eyes dilate.
God, I love my man.
Chapter 22
Breaker
“Twinkles will be fine, Mrs. Lane. Just make sure you keep your granddaughter’s candy stash away from him.”
“Don’t worry. I will definitely do that. You have a good evening, Indy. Thanks again for seeing me.”
