“What a monster,” I whispered.

“Yeah.” Felix sighed. “I want to come and be with you, but there’s a lot to do here. We need to clean this place up and ensure these women and kids find their way home. We’re waiting on a friendly officer now, one we trust.”

“It’s okay,” I said softly, though I was aching for him. “I can wait.”

What were you going to say before?

I wanted to yell that down the phone, but something stopped me, maybe the thought he’d laugh and tell me he wasn’t going to say anything, at least nothing important, nothing that would change my life.

“I thought of you,” Felix said after a pause. “Before I pulled the trigger. I thought of what that bastard tried to make me do.”

“You did the right thing. He killed Julie’s dad. He would’ve killed Mom, me, and so many more people.”

Now, I roll over, the sheets tangling around me, sweaty and clinging. But they could be the cleanest, most luxurious sheets in the world, and I’d still find it difficult to relax.

Thinking of my man.

Rolling over again, I look at the digital clock, the numbers telling me it’s two AM. I’m sure I can hear Julie snoring next door and Mom across the hall, though both are probably in my sleepy imagination.

“Come home,” I whisper into the darkness. “Felix, come home.”

Somehow, sleep takes me.

When I wake, I wonder if this is a dream, the feeling of his breath against the back of my neck, his solid body pressing against me.

I turn over.

And there he is, my man, the lamplight shining in his hair, his eyes gleaming as he stares at me.

“I missed you so much,” he says, pulling me closer, his hand slipping around my waist and around to my ass, pleasure erupting the moment he begins to touch me. “I’m sorry it took so long.”

“You don’t have to apologize,” I whisper, conscious of mom and Julie in the following rooms.

He leans closer and kisses me on the lips. I throw myself into it with more passion than I’ve felt yet, my body burning as our mouths open and our tongues flare together.

“I want you so badly.”

He slides his hand from my ass, guiding me, so I’m on my back, his fingers slipping up my bare legs and to my underwear.

I whimper as he rubs over my panties softly, his eyes locked on me the whole time like nothing could make him look away.

“I want you,” he repeats. “But you need to know something first.”

His expression trembles as he removes his hand, as though it’s difficult for him. My sex aches, pulses, and demands that he puts his hand there again.

“What?” I ask, unable to stop my voice from cracking a little.

It could be about before, what he said after I tattooed him.

“I told you I wanted you the first moment I saw you,” he says, his hand resting on my leg, near my sex but not touching it again.

Yet.

I force myself to focus past the tingling in my thighs, his tempting closeness. His words are making my mind spark with the same brightness, the same hope.

“Yeah….”

“It was more than that.” His hand tightens on my leg as if holding me in place like he thinks I’m going to run away. “It was…everything, Freya. The second I saw you, I imagined you in a wedding dress. I saw you standing in our home with our children gathered around you. I saw you…Freya.”

The tears well in my eyes and streak down my cheeks, my sobs making my voice crack as I try to speak.

“Do you…mean…it?”

Somehow, he manages to find the words in the mess of emotion.

“I mean it,” he says firmly, kissing the tears away. “I wanted it all, a whole life together, the second I saw you. That was what I was going to tell you before I had to leave. I think you deserve to know before we….”

“Complete the heart?” I murmur.

He smiles, nodding. “Exactly. Because when I take you, Freya, I want your virgin pussy completely bare for me. I want you to take my cock deep, with nothing between us, so that when I spill my seed, there’s a chance our future can start right then.”

He stops, laughing grimly. “And this is the part where you tell me I’m insane.”

“I should.” I push the words past the happy tears. “But the truth is, I feel the same. I was thinking about kids as soon as I saw you, too. I was thinking about art projects in the garden and a life together.”

He kisses my cheeks, taking more of my tears, more of the pain.

“It’s a life I’ll do everything to protect,” he says tenderly. “But do you mean it?”

“Yes. Completely.”

“Good, because I’ll never let anything happen to you or the kids.”

I laugh in pure joy, more an outpouring of heat and love than actual laughter.
