“You’re good.”

He moves around a bit, then reaches down and drags me out of the bed by my feet. I let my body flop around, another act I’ve mastered, and when he reaches for my shoulders and pulls me up, my head slumps forward, slamming against his chest. He shakes me a little, then takes my chin in his hand, jerking my head back. Releasing it, my head slams forward again. It hurts, no doubt about it, but I’m getting out of here, so I’ll take it.

“Fuck me.”

Pushing to his feet, he takes me with him, arms under my body as he hauls me up. I flop loosely, and when his hand glides over my face, I know he’s starting to fall for it. My skin feels horrible, and I have no doubt I look just as bad.

“You’re either a really twisted, fucked up kind of good actor or you’re dyin’ ...”

Nothing.

He shifts around a bit more, leaning my body against the counter as he rustles around, maybe digging something out of his pocket. I’m certain it’ll be something sharp. They always use something sharp. A muttered apology leaves his lips and I know that’s the moment to strengthen everything inside me for just a second. I’m right, a slow, hot burn shoots through my arm.

It takes everything not to flinch, change my breathing or do anything to show him that I’m in pain, and believe me, pain is something I’m in right now. A white-hot burn goes up my arm and the coppery scent of blood fills my nose. I can’t break now, not when I’m this close to freedom. I just have to get out of this place so I can escape this and never see Mex or his little band of merry men again.

“Fuck.”

His voice is clipped, concerned.

He moves quickly, turning with my limp body in his arms, and rushes out of the container. It worked! I could scream with joy but instead I keep myself floppy. He walks me to the truck and when he opens the door and throws me in, I let my body flop in whatever position it lands. It’s uncomfortable as hell but he quickly straightens me out on the backseat, pulling an old towel over me.

Then, the joyous sound of the truck door closing and the low rumble of it starting up has my heart racing with relief.

The truck bounces down the road, but I don’t dare to open my eyes. Not yet. If I give myself away too soon, then I’ll never get out. The only way for me to escape this is to jump at the right moment. I need to be in town, in traffic, where he can’t just stop his car and race after me. So, I keep my eyes closed. I even throw in a slight groan and roll, which has him calling out my name, but I don’t answer.

I lie like that for what feels like forever. My hips ache, and my legs are freezing. Finally, the sound of cars can be heard outside, and I know we’re in a town. What town, I’m not certain, but any one will do at this point. I dare to crack my eyes open. I can’t see much from down here, but I can see that there are traffic lights. That’s perfect and all I need. The moment he stops for one, I’ll jump out. He’ll never see it coming.

My eyes quickly scan over him, and I notice his fingers are gripping the wheel tightly, his jaw is locked tight. He actually looks concerned, poor guy. I wish I felt bad, but I don’t. I’ve got business to take care of, and he’s in my way. It’s a shame, though, I wouldn’t have minded spending a little longer with him. Especially if he was willing to put those big, rugged hands on me, or kiss me with that delectable mouth.

Jesus, I need to get out of here.

Now.

Very slowly, I move my hand until I find the seatbelt. I’m positioned on my back, and it’s tucked down the side of me, so it’s easy to find the clip. Then, I take a quick glance at the door handle. It’s above my head, fairly easy to reach, and unlocked. All I have to do is flick the seatbelt off and then reach for that handle. It’ll need to be quick.

The next light we come to a stop at, I make my move.

My fingers push the seatbelt, and it slides off rather loudly. Mex’s head whips around and our eyes meet for only a moment before I throw my body into action, flipping to my knees and opening the truck door. He barks my name and spins, trying to reach back, but he’s not fast enough. Hand just grazing my foot, he doesn’t manage to stop me as I throw myself out of the truck.
