“I’m sure I’ve done worse.” He shrugs, then moves toward the man he shot. I look away as I hear him dragging the body and throwing it into the hole I fell into.

“Why did you kill him?” I whisper.

“He thought he could hunt me, but little does he know you can’t hunt the hunter.” I can hear the truth echo in his voice. “Why are you here?”

“I told you why.” I spin around to see him wiping his hands on his trousers. The body is gone, and his shirt is buttoned up. He looks dangerously good. How can he look so delicious after digging a grave and fucking in the dirt?

“Oh, yes…the house.”

“Yes. Why did you do that?”

He shrugs. “I’ve heard you say you want to move, so move into my place. You can have it. I can buy another.”

I stomp up to him and slap him hard across the face. “I am not your charity case. I do not need to be saved by you.”

His hand snaps out and locks around my throat. “No, you just want to be fucked, dirty and hard. I bet right now you’re turned on. If I squeezed a little harder, I could bend you over again and take you.”

“Remove your hand.” He listens, his hand falling away from my throat. And I hate that he’s right—I would let him take me. I worry that what we have would verge on the line of abuse. But I also don’t think he would do anything to actually hurt me. Anything that he knew I wouldn’t like in the end. He seems to know my body better than I do.

And I hate that the most.

“Your brothers are worried about you. Call them. And tell them to leave me alone.” I turn and start picking my way through the gravestones.

“Mayve.” I stop at his voice but don’t turn around. “Look at me.”

I don’t.

I don’t want to show him my eyes.

I know that’s what he wants.

“Look at me.”

I stay still. “Leave me alone,” I whisper, knowing Kenzo hears me before I start walking again.

I walk all the way home, and when I get there, I crawl into bed, still dirty, and pass out.

When a knock comes on my door the following day, I can’t seem to climb out of bed.

Surely, whoever it is, will go away.

Maybe a week off is what I need,

But as I roll over to face the wall, I wonder how I managed to get myself into this position in the first place.

Was it all by chance?

Was it me spilling milk all over him?

Or was it the fact that he literally saved my life that night without us knowing who each other was?

Or that with him, I’ve been having the best sex of my life?

Who knew I liked any of the stuff he does for me?

I can’t even fool myself. I like it all. A lot.

Why, though?

I’ve had sex. I’ve even had some good sex, mainly with toys involved, but with him…

Another bang comes on my door.

Who the hell?

I hear people talking as I get up and wrap a big sweater around myself before I walk barefoot to the door.

“One second.” I do the sweater up and pull the door open.

Two men I don’t recognize stand there. One is dressed in a blue shirt and well-worn blue denim jeans, and the other is in a light gray shirt and black pants. Both of them turn to look at me at the same time.

“Hi.” I offer a smile, and when neither returns it, I feel uneasy. “Can I help you?” I ask as my hand grips the door.

“Are you Mayve Hitchcock?” the one in blue asks.

“Yes,” I answer.

“Oh, good. Do you happen to know where we could find Kenzo Hunter?”

“Kenzo?” I ask, confused. “Not sure why I would know the answer to that.”

The one in gray looks at my hand.

“Are you not married to him?” he questions, nodding at my ring.

“I keep forgetting to take that off. We are no longer married.” They glance at each other before they nod, and the one in blue turns and heads for the stairs.

“Thanks for your time,” the one in gray says, smirking, and before he leaves, he glances at my ring again. I look down at it too, and I hear the click of a picture being taken. When I raise my head, I see him holding his phone. Did he just take a photo of me?

No, surely not. I’m dressed, not naked. And now I’m even more confused.

Closing the door in his face, I lock it behind me.

What did they want?

And how would they know I’m married to Kenzo?

I don’t go around sharing that information with anyone.

I go back to my room and climb into bed to check my phone, but I see nothing from him.

Did I expect him to say something? No, I kind of didn’t.
