The two of them chuckle together and I realize how much progress Randy’s made. A mere few months ago, he was depressed and dispirited at the hand life had dealt him, but now he’s even able to jest about the unfortunate incident with the playing cards. I’m so grateful and beam happily at my boyfriend.

“No, but seriously, this place is the bomb,” Jethro continues, stealing another glance at the near-naked ladies in the pool. “I mean, this is the life, right? Sunny days, warm weather, pool parties, and lots of sand, albeit desert sand and not beach sand. Plus, the women here aren’t half bad,” he growls. “In all seriousness, maybe I should quit my job and come out here. I’m kind of getting sick of being a firefighter anyways.”

“Nah, you’re just talking shit,” Randy scoffs. “Wasn’t your dad a firefighter? And your grandfather too? It runs in the family, right?”

Jethro nods. “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I have to fight fires forever. Shit, I’ve been with the department for twenty years already, so that’s long enough. You know, I’m not as young as I used to be and firefighting’s a young man’s game,” he winks.

Randy gets a contemplative look.

“Well, maybe you should look into moving out here then,” he says. “Why not? Have you been to see Thunder Strike yet?”

Jethro shakes his head and winks.

“No, but I have half a mind to try out myself because if this guy can do it, then anyone can,” he jokes before clapping my boyfriend on the back. “No really, buddy. It would be nice to have you as a co-worker again and I’m serious when I say I’m thinking about moving out to Vegas.” But then, Jethro gets a mischievous look on his face. “But on another note, did you guys ever start that free use thing I told you about?” he asks in a light tone.

“Shh!” I whisper, looking around scandalized. “OMG, what if someone hears?”

Randy chuckles.

“This is Vegas, baby girl. No one will be shocked.”

I blush, but shake my head.

“Not now!” I hiss. The men nod in agreement, amused, but I’m serious because Randy recently introduced me to the free use lifestyle. Basically, he’s allowed to have sex with me anytime and anywhere he wants. My body’s available for his “free use” and to be honest, the fetish suits us. I’m hardly ever not in the mood, and dancing has taken his libido to new levels. My boyfriend needs it constantly these days, and I’m more than happy to provide it for him. If anything, the pregnancy makes things even hotter.

With that, the conversation continues, lighthearted and smooth. It’s great to be among such wonderful new friends, and I’m glad we even have an old friend here to round out the group. Suddenly, Randy claps his hands and we turn to him, expressions quizzical. He looks gorgeous with that chiseled physique clad only in blue swim trunks, with his black hair swept back from his bronzed features. I shiver, knowing that it all belongs to me.

But then, Randy strolls over to me, and takes my hand before dropping to one knee on the cement.

“What?” I gasp, eyes wide. “Randy?” I whisper shakily as he pulls out a beautiful diamond ring, the gem sparkling in the sunshine. His expression is serious and worshipful at once.

“Samantha Monroe, you are everything I’ve ever wanted in a woman and more,” he begins in a low tone. “We’ve been through some insane times together, including that which shall not be mentioned. But I’m crazy for you, honey, and this is the perfect time to proclaim my love in public. Will you, baby girl? Will you become Mrs. Randy Sterling and make me an honest man?”

I gasp with tears streaming down my cheeks. Just a few months ago, I had no idea what I was doing with my life, and no idea what I wanted to do with it either. Then this man came into my life and it was as if blinders were removed from my eyes. My future became clear. I want to be his. I want to be his wife, and the mother of his child. I want to have a family, and now, my newfound dream is becoming permanent.

“Yes, Randy,” I sniffle, nodding my head quickly. “Yes, yes, I’ll marry you. I would love to.”

The handsome man lets out a relieved laugh and slides the ring onto my finger before standing up to pull me in for a kiss. Everyone claps and cheers, hooting and hollering loudly as the two of us hold each other close. After all, Randy’s right: we have been on a wild ride, from our meeting by the dumpster to this latest career development. Yet I’m sure that this is what I want, and without him, it would all be pointless.
