We both sat with our backs pressed against the mountain of pillows behind us, “What’s this?” I held up the folder and turned it this way and that.

“Open it!” I did as I was told, and the first few lines made my vengeful heart dance.

“You had them investigated.”

“Yes, I knew the opportunity to fuck with them would be worth more to you than diamonds and gold, so congratulations on our marriage.”

“Bless your heart, you know me.” I tried to bring tears to my eyes to give him the puppy dog look, but he just shook his head.

“Check your phone. I’m sure you have a way of seeing the flea delivery.”

“Oh my gosh, I almost forgot.” I scrambled off the bed and went in search of my phone. That’s when I noticed that he’d had all of my stuff from the resort transferred here.

Later for that, I’ve got more important things to do. “Don’t just watch it over there; I wanna see too.” Heeeeyyyy, this marriage thing is shaping up to be not so bad at all. Denny would never join me in any of my revenge schemes; he was too high-brow for that.

Coming from a wealthy family he always put on airs and acted as if he was high above everyone else. He’d had me fooled that he was of the highest caliber, morally speaking, and I was too disinterested to notice the truth.

Though my mind wasn’t on him yet, there was no reason I couldn’t let some things stew while I worked on Helen and her spawn.

ALYSSA

“Before you do anything, watch this.” He opened his laptop and pulled up a video. It was him, sitting somewhere downstairs in this very house with a renowned reporter. I didn’t know what was going on until the reporter asked him, “So, how did you meet this dynamo that you can’t wait to marry?”

He told the story of how we met but not only that, he claimed to have fallen in love at first sight but had to pull back once he found out that I was engaged. He was willing to take the loss (lies) until he learned that the same day we met, I came back to my home state to find my fiancé in bed with someone else, and he didn’t wait to swoop in and convince me to marry him.

He talked about how hard it was to convince me, but his persuasion doesn’t only work in the business world but in his personal life as well. “I thought you were doing the interview after the wedding?”

“I was, but then I thought about it. With us getting married so soon after the breakup, people might think you were the one who cheated. This way, if anyone claims that now, after my interview, I can sue them for defamation.”

“Ohhh, I didn’t think of that.” I lifted my hand, and we high-fived. Then I got my iPad because I decided that my phone was too small for what I was about to see. I opened up the security app in my Dad’s home and rewound the recording to earlier in the day.

I knew that because I asked him to have the fleas delivered during our ceremony that, I just needed to go back to that exact time because, if nothing else, he’s proven himself to be very efficient.

I was all but jumping out of my skin as I watched Helen go to the door. The look on her face when she saw the box that looked like some kind of name brand that I couldn’t place. “What box is that?”

“She likes Mugler.” I just looked at his freaky self because why does he know that?

From the look on her face, he wasn’t lying, and she muttered something about Dad probably trying to bribe her for his screw-up. She looked as if she hadn’t slept very well the night before, nothing at all like she usually does when Dad is around.

Her hair was matted, there were black circles around her eyes and I could all but smell her morning breath. She looked ripe. I snapped a still of the mess that she was and moved on. She shook the box first before tugging on the ribbon and then peeling back the top.

She opened her mouth to scream, and a few fleas flew in. She snapped her mouth shut and ran around the room, retching while hundreds of those little bastards spread their wings and went on the prowl.

I looked at my watch with disappointment. It was too late or too early to call the city. The fleas looked like a cloud. That’s how many they were. They even followed her up the stairs when she tried to escape, and I guess the idiot didn’t realize that she was still holding the box in her hand.
