“Nathan does. He’s been with him the longest. I’m not sure what all he does, but he has keys and things to Lawson’s.”
“So technically, I have two with Lauren.” My ears perk up at the mention of a female name. Vinny opens a container, setting it on the counter that I don’t recall seeing when we came in. Everything on the countertop had been cleared. All of it in its place. “Well, two and a half if I count how often you’re always popping in here to do things.”
“Lauren's food choices aren’t the best.” For the first time, Fay makes a face that isn’t one of happiness. It’s more discontent, leading me to believe she’s not a big fan of Lauren. Which heightens my curiosity because Fay took to me immediately. Why doesn’t she like this Lauren chick?
“That’s because she gets what I tell her to.” Fay turns so only I can see her roll her eyes, and it’s not in a teasing way. The plot thickens, and I have a feeling I’m going to be team Fay on this.
“I love these.” Vinny bites into a cookie he pulled from the container.
“I can teach you to make them if you like, JJ,” Fay offers.
“Mom, she doesn’t have to cook for me just because she’s my wife.” At my wife, my stomach flutters. The reality of this hits me full force.
“I’d actually love for you to teach me. I mean honestly, what else do I have to do? I don’t have a job at the moment.”
“You don’t need one.” Vinny bites into another cookie. Is my job being his wife now? The contract covered so many things about what he’d take care of. Things I don't need.
“Don’t need one?” I repeat. The concept of not having a job or being in school at least is foreign to me.
“I’m not going to tell you that you can’t have a job, but I travel for work and would like it if you could come with me. Plus, we will have to attend random events and such.”
“I don’t know.” I worry my bottom lip between my teeth. Vinny puts the lid back on the container before coming around the counter toward me.
“It’s not something you need to make a decision about right now. You’ve worked since you were old enough to get a job. Sometimes two jobs while going to school. Relax for a minute.”
Wow, not only is that really sweet, but he was thorough when he researched my background. That should irritate me, but I kind of love that he wanted to learn everything about me that he could. He not only learned it but remembered it too.
He reaches up, and using his thumb, he pulls my bottom lip out from between my teeth. My eyes drop to his mouth. A mouth that was between my thighs not long ago. My body starts to heat as Vinny lowers his mouth toward mine.
“I’m still here, kids,” Fay chimes in. I jump back.
“Mom,” Vinny grumbles.
“You two are cute. I see the chemistry and get why you couldn’t wait, Vincent. You’ve always gone after what you wanted.”
“I have,” he responds, his eyes still trained on me.
I’m starting to think this marriage is going to be nothing like I thought it was supposed to be.

Vincent
I’ve been a morning person my whole life. I’m in bed around ten and up before six. I’m so used to the same routine, I don’t even have to set an alarm. I hit my gym before I get ready for the day and head into the office. Today was the first morning I hadn’t wanted to get up from my bed. When I finally made myself look at the time, it was already eight.
I hadn’t carried Jules to bed until after one in the morning. We’d ended up in the movie room upstairs, where we’d watched a few shows before we ended up ordering takeout and started another. She’d passed out a little before midnight, but her head had been lying on my thigh, and I hadn’t wanted to wake her.
Instead, I sat there and ran my fingers through her hair like some psycho. I need to get control of myself. I’d already pounced all over her. I barely got her in my front door, and I had her naked in my bed. You’d think I was a pro at that shit or something. Finally, I’d made myself get up and carry her down to the bed at least.
To my surprise, however, when I’d gotten into the bed, she’d rolled right over to me and draped her arm across my chest. Slowly throughout the night, she inched over on top of me. Right now, she’s like a blanket spread over me, and I really don’t want to move, but I know that I need to.
