I beamed, my eyes brightening with hope.
I would get to see Jessie, the one man who I knew would never judge me, no matter how fucked up I was.
Julian’s smartwatch went off, and he sighed as he looked down at it. “Fuck, I need to take this,” he grunted as he stood up. He walked over to Meghan and pressed his lips to her temple. “I love you. Don’t overwork yourself. Axel will be by to eat lunch with you in a little bit.”
She kissed his cheek. “Be careful.”
He flashed her a grin. “Always, baby girl.”
He slipped out of the room. Meghan came over to me. “Come on. Let’s go see if Mrs. Evelyn has some blueberry muffins.”
My mouth watered. If there was one thing my little one was craving, it was definitely blueberry muffins. I could eat them all day if Mrs. Evelyn would let me.
Meghan was betting on the fact that I was having a little girl.
I honestly didn’t care as long as my baby was healthy.
I looked up from the book in my hands when the door to the room I was in opened, revealing Jessie’s muscular, powerful frame. Tears instantly filled my eyes and spilled over onto my cheeks. I jumped up from the couch with a sob.
He caught me as I crashed into him, his strength wrapping around me. “Fuck, I missed you,” he croaked as he held me tight to him. He gently walked me backward, his arms never leaving me as he led me further back into the room so he could shut the door behind him. “Shit’s been rough without you, baby girl.”
I leaned back a little and reached up to trace his face with my fingers. He hadn’t shaved in a couple of days, and he looked tired as hell. “Missed you,” I managed to get out.
He grinned, his eyes brightening. “You’re talking more,” he breathed in amazement.
I smiled up at him. “Little bit.”
He leaned down and softly kissed me. “Fucking amazing, baby girl. I’m so goddamn proud of you.”
Pride swirled in my chest. I loved making Jessie happy.
He eased back from me and led me over to the couch that I had been sitting on. He instantly drew me down onto his lap before he picked up the romance novel I had been reading. I blushed as he ran his eyes over the cover.
He set it aside. “Becoming a romantic on me, baby?” he asked with a teasing smile on his lips.
My blush deepened, and I dug my face into the curve of his neck. He laughed softly. “God, I missed you,” he breathed. He pressed his lips to my temple. “I know you’ve still got a long way to go, baby girl, but I’m so fucking happy to finally get to see you. It’s felt like forever.”
I grabbed his hand and placed it over my belly before I looked up at him. He slipped his hand under my shirt and rubbed his thumb over my stomach. “Gaining weight, baby girl. Looks fucking amazing on you. How far along are you now?”
“N—nine weeks,” I told him once I managed to force my voice to work again.
“Can’t wait until you’re actually showing,” Jessie murmured, continuing to rub his thumb over my belly. “You’re going to be so fucking adorable, baby.”
I smiled at him, a light blush staining my cheeks. We were silent for a few minutes before Jessie spoke up again. “Do you remember when you were fifteen, and you were telling me about the kind of life you wanted when you got older and could finally live on your own, away from Farley?”
I nodded at him as I ran my fingers through his hair, unable to stop touching him. “I found your dream house,” he told me softly, turning his head so his dark eyes met mine. My eyes widened in surprise. “And I just signed the papers on it this morning,” he informed me. “Even better news is that you’re only about six miles from Meghan, so you’ll still be close to her when you get out.”
My bottom lip trembled. Tears welled in my eyes, so many emotions swirling inside of my chest for the amazing man in front of me. “Lincoln and I want you to have everything you could possibly ever want. We’ve been talking about this for a while, but couldn’t ever decide on how to go about it.”
“Lincoln?” I asked him, my voice trembling.
Jessie sighed and rubbed my back. “Julian is doing his best to get bail granted. The attorney he hired is the best in the state. And the attorney also has a copy of the security footage, showing Lucky popping off at the mouth at us, and also of Sheriff Youngblood hitting Lincoln in his stomach with his baton.”
My heart constricted in my chest and my bottom lip trembled. The cops in Farley had really turned against these incredible men, and I hated it. Hated it so fucking much. It was all because they sided with me.
