When five minutes turns into ten, I become fidgety again. We all do. Logan leans against the wall, trying to play it cool while both Cass and Elle pace in front of the door.

Then finally, my phone rings in my pocket and I scoop it out, finding a video call from Sean. I answer it as fast as humanly possible and his beaming face quickly appears on my screen as everyone crowds around. “It’s a girl,” he announces proudly, the small crib in the background.

“Fuck, yeah,” I cheer as Cassie throws herself into Jax’s arms in a bruising hug, her excitement having her squeezing him until he can’t fucking breathe. “When can I meet her?” Cassie calls out, leaning in toward the screen.

“Give Sara a chance to get stitched up and meet her daughter and the second we’re back in the ward, she’s all yours,” Sean says, glancing back and forth between the crib, his wife, and the screen. “I better go, but I’ll call when we’re ready.”

We let him go, and the second the screen goes dark, Logan fixes me with a smug as fuck grin. “Told you it was a girl,” he says, his brows bouncing. “You owe me five hundred bucks.”

Shit. I was so fucking sure too.

I let out a heavy sigh, still wanting to deny that I was wrong, when a blaring alarm echoes through the hallway. My eyes widen, and not a second later, the hallway fills with nurses and doctors flying toward us. We all plaster ourselves against the wall, letting them pass through the double doors, and I hold it open for them as they go, but as they stop at Sara’s door and barge through, it sends nothing but sheer panic and fear through each of us. I find myself holding onto the open door, more than ready to race in there after them.

“What the fuck’s going on?” Logan calls out to the passing nurses, but every single one of them ignores us, and honestly, as much as it kills me not knowing what’s happening in there, I’m glad they’re not wasting precious seconds by stopping to fill us in.

The doors open and close, and my beautiful niece is rushed out of the room by a midwife and sent down the hall right before Sean is shoved out by an angry nurse, the door quickly closing in his face. Whatever is going on in there has everything to do with Sara.

Sean tries to fight his way back into the room, and Logan and I have no choice but to hurry through the double doors. We race down the hallway to step in and grab him, forcing him back from the door. Whatever is going down in there, the doctors need room to move, and while Sean desperately needs to be at his wife’s side, he can’t help her right now. He’s only going to be in the way.

“What’s going on?” I demand, desperately trying to pull his attention to me and calm down enough to stop fighting us.

“She’s hemorrhaging,” Sean says through a clenched jaw, undeniable fear and desperation shining in his wet eyes as he tries to push us off, determined to get back to his wife. “They can’t stop the bleeding.”

“Fuck,” Logan says as Cassie falls into Jax’s arms, her whole body shaking with fear as the whole family now hovers outside Sara’s door.

Tears fall from Sean’s eyes, and I can’t help but feel empty inside. The helplessness in his eyes fucking kills me, and suddenly I’m right back where I was years ago, standing at my father’s side as he could do nothing but watch as my mother lost her fight to breast cancer. “She was losing too much blood,” he tells us. “Something must have gone wrong.”

“Hey,” I say, trying to break him out of the panic, but I know it’s useless until he can get back in that room and physically see that she’s alright. “She’s going to be alright. The doctors know what they’re doing,” I tell him, repeating the very words he’d used to soothe Sara earlier.

With that, Sean loses the fight and gives in to the fear. He stops trying to push us away and breaks down, falling against the wall and sliding to the ground, his head buried in his hands. Cass sits next to him and takes his hand in hers, gently squeezing and desperately trying to soothe his fear, but nothing can save him now, not until the doctor comes out of the room and physically tells him that she’s okay.

Jax leans against the wall as I pace up and down the hallway, my hands shaking at my sides. Logan holds Elle, who’s silently crying in his arms, and I’m sure this is all bringing back memories of her past when she knelt over her little sister and watched her bleed out, unable to save her.
