“Was it someone I know?” I asked, unfamiliar rage hitting me out of nowhere. I didn’t even know that guys did that and it made me fucking sick to think that some random would’ve put Nova at risk just so he didn’t have to wrap his shit up.

“No,” she said easily. “It was last year. Some guy that was in town for a football game.”

“Douchebag.”

“For sure,” she replied, nodding. “I came real close to clocking him, but I figured the smarter move was just to get the fuck out of there.”

“You need to be more careful,” I said softly, smoothing her hair out of her face.

“I’m pretty good at taking care of myself.”

“Yeah, yeah,” I grumbled, making her laugh. “I know, you’re such a badass.”

“I am a badass.”

“What have we talked about a hundred times?” I asked, pulling her against my side as I relaxed into the bed.

“I might know how to throw a punch,” she said in exasperation, mimicking my voice. “But I’m still smaller than most men and I’ll probably only have the chance to throw one.”

“You get the fuck out of there,” I reminded her. “Tryin’ to take on a full-grown man is a bad fuckin’ idea.”

“It’s funny that you think I’d try.”

“I’ve seen you pissed,” I muttered.

“But have you ever seen me stupid?” she joked, grinning up at me. “You worry too much.”

“I’m just gonna keep you with me,” I teased, running my hand down her side. “Don’t have to worry you’re out there takin’ risks if you’re naked in my bed.”

I knew the moment the words were out of my mouth that I’d fucked up. Nova didn’t react to the possession in my tone, not in a way that anyone else would notice, but I saw it in her eyes that I’d crossed the line we were flirting with.

“Sorry,” she said lightly after a moment. “I can’t live in your bed. I have to work and I actually have a date on Thursday.”

“Pity,” I replied with a fake laugh, ignoring the way my gut twisted at the thought of Nova on a date with someone else. I rolled to my back and stretched. “I’d like to live here.”

“Yeah, right,” she muttered, rolling onto her stomach so she could look at me. She propped her head on her hands and I couldn’t stop myself from taking a long look at her arched back and glorious ass. Fuck me.

“I’m serious,” I said, looking back at her face. “I’m sick of changin’ oil and bein’ the bitch boy at the club. Stayin’ in bed with you sounds real fuckin’ good.”

“Poor Rumi,” she replied with a small smile. “Doesn’t like being a prospect because he’s been a princeling for so long.”

“I was never a fuckin’ princeling,” I argued.

“Oh, yes you were!” She grinned. “You and your siblings ran wild all over the club grounds like you owned the place.”

“All the kids do.”

“Not all of them,” she corrected, tilting her head. “Just the little princes and princesses.”

“I can’t help it that I grew up at the clubhouse.”

“You’re right,” she said. “You can’t. But don’t start whining once you actually have to earn a right to be there.”

“I’m not whinin’.”

“I’m betting you don’t get nearly the shit that other prospects do.”

“I probably get more shit,” I grumbled.

“No you don’t,” she replied, rolling her eyes. “Because they already love you. They already know you’re loyal. They already know you’re going to be a member. Nepotism is alive and well at the Aces and Eights MC.”

“Fuck,” I muttered, seeing her point. “I’m a whiny little bitch.”

Nova laughed. “You’ve been a prospect for a year already. I’m guessing you’ll patch in before too long.”

“Tell Dragon that the next time you see him?”

“Not a chance.”

“You know,” I murmured, glaring at her. “Best friends aren’t supposed to give you shit.”

“Uh-huh,” she replied dubiously.

“They’re supposed to support you and make you feel better…” my words trailed off as she leaned over and ran her tongue around my nipple.

“Like this? Does this make you feel better?”

“Again?” I asked, smiling as her hand slid over my thigh.

“Only if it’ll make you feel better,” she joked, squealing as I flipped her onto her back. “I’m just trying to be a good friend!”

Chapter 4

Nova

“Come back,” Rumi said, his voice muffled by a pillow as he halfheartedly reached for me. “I promise I won’t be a whiny bitch anymore.”

“Can’t,” I replied, pulling my black work pants on. Ugh, getting back into my work clothes after I’d already showered kind of defeated the purpose of showering. I needed to remember a change of clothes the next time I decided to stop by. “I told Nana I’d come home and hang with Bird tonight.”

“Your brother’s old enough to hang by himself,” Rumi grumbled.

“So are you,” I shot back.

“Okay, that’s fair.”

“Her and Pop are going out tonight,” I said as I pulled on my shirt. “So I said I’d stay home.”
