Before Chanel became Chairman, the Board had forced her to marry Pedro—a leader of an enemy gang. They asked her to do it to maintain peace for the Killer Crows. And Chanel married him fast and with not one complaint. She didn’t know or love Pedro. That was how dutiful she’d been.

And Pedro cheated and embarrassed her over and over. She was so damn unhappy, always drinking and talking to the ghosts on the property.

Due to the Board, Romeo and Chanel led strict obedient lives and experienced no real joy or love.

Something has to change.

I’d been reading up on leadership skills. Meanwhile, the Board thought I only needed to learn from them. I knew that they were wrong.

Killer Crows needed fresh ideas.

What’s the point of money and power if you don’t control your own life?

Rue looked at me. “Thoughts?”

Merik spoked instead, “I think the Board and the checks and balances are all bullshit. I want my cousin’s reign to be at her discretion. No votes or anything.”

Rue smiled. “So like a dictator?”

My shoulders felt even heavier.

Rue led us down the stairs or something. “Being a Chairman doesn’t mean never listening to people and always being completely in control.”

“Yes. Yes.” I nodded. “A wise Chairman bends and follows when necessary.”

“And you need to be bending a whole lot in these next ninety days.” Rue gestured to her holstered guns. “Or I'm going to have to do a whole lot of killing.”

No. I don’t want that.

There had already been so much death in the West. I’d lost both my siblings in the same month. My parents had passed years ago and it had been peaceful, yet sad. But when I lost my brother and sister in the most violent and insensitive way, it shattered something inside of me.

Even worse, I completely felt alone and unprepared for everything.

Not only was I trying to prove a point to the Board and Killer Crows, but I was also trying to create courage and confidence within myself.

Because deep down inside the secret hidden parts of me, was a shaking, terrified little girl who desperately missed her siblings and parents. Who was so scared to rule all alone. Who still wasn’t sure of all the people that she should and should not trust.

Who just wanted someone to love her.

I cleared my throat. “I’m going to make a strong effort to work with the Board.”

Rue crossed her arms over her chest. “Let’s just hope that you really can do it for more than a day.”

I smirked. “You don't think I can listen to the Board for longer than 24 hours?”

Dane shook his head. “We’ll see.”

We left the staircase.

I shook my head. “Have the Executives arrived?”

Rue nodded. “Simon was the first to appear. He brought his son, Bassel, and gave him a tour of the first level.”

I rolled my eyes. “The nerve of him.”

Rue sighed. “Simon pranced around with his son as if he was a real estate owner showing off the estate.”

Dane turned to her in shock. “Like it would possibly be his new home?”

I scowled. “They think it will be easy to get rid of me.”

“They’re wrong,” Rue chimed in. “We’ll show them. But don’t forget to play your part.”

We traveled down another long hallway where the door to the boardroom sat at the end.

“That’s what I’m trying to do, Rue.” I turned to the other side. “What do you think Dane?”

Dane grinned. “With your cleavage on display and the way that skirt is hugging those hips, you will have all the Shareholders sitting in jail.”

I groaned. “Meanwhile, Romeo never had to wear tight clothes or show off his chest in a meeting.”

Rue chuckled. “Romeo definitely had his shirt unbuttoned and his bulge on full display.”

I turned up my nose. “What?”

“Shoot.” Rue laughed. “Some of those guys on the Board go both ways. They just keep it all secret.”

“And that’s the other thing I want to change about the Killer Crows.” I hit the air with my hand. “Why do we have to hide who we are or pretend to be one particular thing? We need to accept everybody for who they are.”

Dane snorted. “You're talking about a bunch of old men with old ideas and old beliefs.”

“That’s the other problem.” I continued down the steps. “Why aren’t there any women on the Board of Directors? No one has had a problem with this?”

“I love your thinking.” Rue bobbed her head. “I’ve often wondered the same thing. There’s been so many high-level women in Killer Crows that have changed the game and this city.”

Dane raised his hand. “My mother was one of them.”

“My grandmother too.” Rue dotted the air. “None of these strong women have got their due in Killer Crows. They just retired and sat alone in their houses.”

Merik snorted. “This is why we should blast these motherfuckers.”
