I found Don Enzo to be a brilliant man.

Therefore, I had no second thoughts about working for the family, when I became an adult. I’d proven my worth through violence and bloodshed. I’d conquered and dominated in the Don’s name.

Now I was the Underboss of America’s entire West Coast and I was expected to be at Don Enzo’s beck and call. There could never be a time where he phoned and I took too long to pick up.

I placed the phone to my ear and rose from the chair. “How can I help you tonight, Don Enzo?”

“First, how is Tokyo?”

I smiled at the image of Hana burying her face between the other woman’s thighs. “I can’t complain.”

A dark chuckle left him. “How many women this evening, nephew?”

I grinned. “Four.”

“Santino. Santino.”

“It’s been quiet. When I can’t shoot my guns, I want to shoot my cock.”

“Then, you should be happy with this news.”

“What’s that?” I put my back to the women.

“Have you heard of Paradise City?”

“Some have called it Gangster’s Paradise.” I shrugged. “It’s reported to have more criminals per square foot than any other place on Earth.”

“And others have named Paradise, the land of luxury.”

“I’ve heard that too.”

“Santino, I want you there tomorrow. I have a new job for you.”

Excitement hit me. I checked my watch. “What’s the mission?”

“This one is different than the usual ones.”

“How?”

“There will be less killing.”

I frowned. “But, I will get to shoot somebody?”

“I’m sure of it. There’s just some people that will be off limits. And the killing may take time.”

I sighed.

Don Enzo continued, “We’ll need to execute this properly. I have a lot of plans for Paradise.”

“But what are your plans, Uncle Enzo?” Usually, when I used that tag, I could get a little bit more information than he would have given normally.

A hint of humor dotted his words. “All will be known in due time, nephew.”

My frown deepened. “It sounds like I’m not going to enjoy this assignment.”

“You may not, but I hope that you will be open minded. Sometimes there are things more important than death, money, and power.”

“I hope not.” I grabbed my jacket, guns, and rushed off. “Will you be in Paradise, when I arrive?”

“I won’t, but Tommaso will be there. He’s getting everything ready.”

Hana called after me, “Santino?! Where are you going? Did I just eat her pussy for no reason?!”

Keeping my attention on Don Enzo, I paused at the door. “You sent Tommaso to meet me in Paradise city?”

“He will be helpful with this mission.”

But how?

That was odd. Tommaso wasn’t a true soldier. He managed events and gatherings, making sure security was in place as well as the celebration was thrilling and exciting.

The Don called me to execute a massacre.

Meanwhile, the Don only called Tommaso for birthdays, weddings, and funerals.

Confused, I departed the suite and gestured for my men to follow. They left their prostitutes, gathered their weapons, and matched my pace.

I quirked my brows. “Don, what sort of mission is this?”

“You’ll know soon.” He hung up.

Why can’t I know now?

I put the phone away.

I’m probably going to really hate this mission.

Don Enzo was a mental strategist. He was the one to look to for guidance, and I trusted his decisions with my life. I didn’t know what he was planning to do, but I trusted him.

My main guard, Leonardo opened the door for me. “What’s wrong, sir?”

“Don Enzo has a new mission for us. Get the jet ready. Make sure we fly back to the States tonight.”

Leonardo widened his eyes. “We’re returning to America?”

“Paradise City to be exact.”

The Big Mystery

L

ast night’s flight had been fine.

The plane’s engines rumbled, a soothing beat of drumming to my ears. It was like a beat kick-starting a song just before the chorus. It was the sound of oncoming chaos, the promise of adventure.

Hours later, we arrived in Paradise and checked into Obsidian Hotel with no problem.

The next morning, I woke with an energetic start.

Paradise’s sunlight shined through the glass and angled like a sharpened dagger ready for a victorious war. It had sliced through the gloom of my dark sleeping mind.

And when I rose from the bed, that same brilliant sunlight beckoned me to dress and come out. I did just that.

Currently, I stood out on the balcony with Leonardo.

While there’s mystery to this mission, I love this city’s view.

Taking in the view of Paradise, I breathed in the fresh air and placed my hands on the balcony’s rail. An ocean breeze flowed by. It was refreshing against my face, as if trying to take my breath away from me. I smelled the scent of the ocean, tinged with salt and sunlight.

But there was more to the city’s fragrance.

I also caught the trace of smoke and death, the smell of a place entrenched in money and violence.

Not a bad city to conquer at all.
