“I will never lie to you, Angel.”
Harper thought back over the years that they’d known each other. He hadn’t ever told her something that wasn’t true, even when it would have been easier. She should have remembered that earlier. Turning her face into his chest, she hid from him.
“Stop, Harper. You didn’t cause the problem. Had I taken my phone into the bathroom with me, none of this would have occurred,” Colt pointed out.
“It’s not your fault she answered your phone.” Harper lifted her head to meet his gaze to challenge that statement.
“Then we agree. This is all on whatever her name is.”
“You still don’t know?” Harper asked and giggled.
“I don’t and it’s fine. My manager’s track record isn’t good. She’ll be working on her next husband soon. Enough of her. Let’s talk about us.”
“I like that—us.”
“Me, too. We meet with the architect together on Friday evening. Did I tell you I figured out who our neighbors are?”
“Really? Who?”
“Amber and Rio.”
“Amber and Rio? Oh! I forgot to tell you the reason I called you in the first place. A man started shooting in Murphy’s. Rio took him down but broke his leg,” Harper shared.
“What? At Murphy’s? How’s Rio?” Colt asked.
“He had surgery. They expect him to make a full recovery. There’s a surprise party for him on Wednesday.”
“And we’ll go.”
“Do you have time?” she asked, feeling hopeful.
“I’ll make time. Our friends are important.”
“I’m really glad they’re going to be our neighbors,” Harper celebrated.
“Me, too. Now, we just need to get Maisie and Beau back into town.”
“You never know. Maybe they’ll choose some land near us as well.”
“That would be miraculous, Little girl. Just don’t get your heart too set on it. I’d hate for you to be disappointed,” he warned.
Puckering her lips, Harper distracted him with a quick kiss. She leaned back to look at his handsome face. Loving the flare of passion in his expression, Harper traced the skiff of hair that led down the center line of his torso. “Can I touch you, Daddy?”
“You have my permission, Little girl. I would love to feel your hand around me.”
Tentatively, she drew a line along the upper side of his morning erection. Exploring his shaft, she wrapped her fingers around him and squeezed lightly, drawing a groan from Colt.
“Lick your hand, Angel.”
Harper loved the heat radiating from his eyes as she lifted her hand to her lips. Feeling dangerous, she lapped up her palm over her fingers, and watched his eyes darken as they focused on her actions. She felt daring, sexy, and powerful all wrapped into one, loving the heady feeling.
Returning her hand to its former grip, she slid her hand down his thick cock. His hand wrapped around hers, showing her how to please him. Daringly, she leaned down to lap at the head when it emerged from her grip. The buck of his hips told her everything she needed to know. She set out to drive him crazy.
Back at home on Sunday afternoon, Harper tried to do all her weekend stuff in a couple of hours. Colt pitched in to complete the chores and limited the number of things Harper thought she needed to do. Making a list, he promised he would work on them while he was at home that week.
Harper didn’t argue. She felt awful. Her period was overdue and she felt nauseous when she smelled certain scents. Why would powdered laundry detergent make her sick? That fresh scent the manufacturer added made her lurch for the sink, sure she would lose her lunch.
She couldn’t be pregnant, could she? They’d used condoms every time. Colt made sure to protect her. What would he say? Channeling her inner Maisie, she figured out how to get to the store to buy a test. Her no-nonsense brilliant friend would point out that was the only way Harper would know.
Remembering the TV shows she’d seen that tested in the morning, Harper pretended to potty when her Daddy sent her to the toilet when she woke up. Feeling like she would burst, Harper stopped at the twenty-four-hour store on her way to the daycare. Harper couldn’t decide quickly which test to buy. Panicking that she’d have an accident, she picked up three different ones and paid for them quickly.
She opened the packages at the first stoplight and started reading the directions. Colt would kill her for doing anything other than paying attention while in the car. Harper tried to rationalize that she wasn’t reading while driving. She knew that wouldn’t be good enough for her Daddy. That didn’t stop her from making sure she knew what to do.
Dashing into the bathroom, she readied all the tests while dancing with the need to use the toilet. Finally, she peed on all the sticks, fumbling one into the toilet. “Crap!”
A knock on the door told her time was up. It still was early, but the parents would know that she was there. Quickly finishing her business, Harper threw the spoiled tester in the trash and washed her hands. She stored the others in the cabinet above the toilet to finish processing and dashed out to open the door.
