“As Hayden told you…” My mom gave a quick introduction of her and my dad, then jumped right into questioning my girl.

“What do you do, Laurel?”

“I’m a sort of travel blogger, focused on van life,” she replied before explaining it in a little more detail.

“Wow,” my mom said with a bit of awe. “That sounds fascinating. And so fun to be able to see all those new places.”

“Did I hear you right?” my dad piped up. “You live in a van?” There was no judgment in his tone, only curiosity.

Laurel told them how she’d slowly built what essentially became a tiny motorhome out of a van. She got more animated and excited as she talked, and I could tell my parents were enchanted by her.

“Okay,” I finally cut in. “That’s enough interrogation for today.”

My mom looked like she was about to argue, but my dad said something in her ear, and she huffed and then acquiesced. “Okay. But I expect you to call again soon.”

“Sure, Mom,” I agreed.

We said our goodbyes, and I hung up, then tossed my phone onto an end table.

“Sorry about that. My parents can be a little…over enthusiastic, you might say.”

Laurel chuckled. “I think they’re adorable.”

I thought about her situation and nodded. “Yeah, I got pretty lucky.” Then I grinned and teased, “Just be prepared for them to treat you like one of their kids now. They clearly adore you, which just shows where I got my excellent taste from.”

Her head tilted back, and she rolled her eyes at me. “I doubt they’ll be adopting me into the family after one phone call.”

I snorted. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

I’d heard the note of longing in her voice, and I was immensely glad that my parents were so accepting and loving. They’d easily seen how much she meant to me, and that alone would have made them like her. But it had been glaringly obvious that my mom had fallen in love with Laurel, too.

I was going to give my girl the family she’d always deserved, starting with friends, amazing parents, and then our own babies.

Hopefully, I’d already accomplished that goal. The first time I’d fucked her without a condom had been accidental. But after realizing I wanted a family with her, I’d been doing my best to speed the process along. It also hadn’t escaped my thoughts that getting her pregnant would tie her to me permanently. I intended to get a ring on her finger as soon as possible, and if she was carrying our baby, it would give me the perfect excuse to make sure the wedding happened immediately.

HAYDEN

We spent the next couple of days in our own little cocoon, getting to know more about each other and fucking like rabbits. I was almost sorry when the blizzard finally began to let up. Even though I was excited about moving forward with our life, I’d miss having her all to myself.

I'd had to share her attention from time to time, which annoyed me, but I wanted her to already feel like a part of the family when we walked out of the cabin.

My parents had called once a day, ignoring me and spending all their time fussing over Laurel.

My phone vibrated again while I was slowly stripping Laurel out of her clothes as we kissed our way to the bathroom to make good use of the tub.

Growling in frustration, I yanked the device from my pocket and tossed it onto the bed, determined to ignore the call.

“It could be important,” Laurel insisted against my lips.

“Nothing is more important than you,” I murmured.

But she pulled back and gave me a pointed look. “That’s sweet, but what if something’s happened to your parents?”

I scoffed. “In the hour since the last time they interrupted my plans to get you naked?”

Laurel giggled, and I pulled her back in for another kiss. When she pulled back this time, she was frowning. I sighed. “Fine. I’ll—”

“That’s my phone,” she murmured, her brow drawing down. I released her so she could scamper over to the nightstand and grab her cell.

“Oh! It’s Gwynne!” She hit the accept button and grinned at her friend when the call connected. “Merry Christmas!”

Gwynne chuckled. “Merry belated Christmas, I guess. I didn’t want to call in case you were conserving battery, but when you sent me the text that you had power, I figured it was safe.”

“Absolutely,” Laurel replied. “How was your holiday?”

I sighed dramatically as I went about gathering our clothes, and Laurel shot me an exasperated frown. When I winked at her, she bit back a smile, and her cheeks bloomed with color.

“Why are you blushing?” Gwynne asked. “Is someone there with you? Oh, crap! Did I interrupt a holiday hookup?”

She bit her lip, looking unsure. I didn’t understand her confusion. I had certainly made it clear that I wanted a future with her.
