By my calculations, we should’ve had sex twelve times by then. Twice in the hot tub. Three times while I was laid up and needing my Nurse Kenzie to make it all better. The wheelchair sex we were meant to have was going to be nothing short of filthy. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say no woman had ever turned me down before. Liam indicated this affected my personality, but if by that he meant I was high on life and had very little to complain about, he was right.

I met her ex-boyfriend and that was definitely over. So what was holding her back from hopping into bed with me? I’ll ask.

“Kenzie, why haven’t we had sex?”

She tripped. Sienna had to grab her, saving Kenzie from an up-close-and-personal look at the sidewalk.

“Excuse me?”

“Why haven’t we had sex?” I repeated, and louder. That cute, embarrassed expression shown neon red. I was doubly glad I tucked it away to draw out of Kenzie when the mood struck me.

“Are you seriously asking me this in the middle of the street?” she hissed.

I shrugged. “I’m curious.”

“If it helps,” Sienna spoke up, “it’s not because she doesn’t want—” Kenzie clapped her hand over her mouth.

“Do not help,” Kenzie ordered. “Sunny, if you want to have an adult conversation about our relationship and if it’ll one day change, I’m happy to do that later when we’re alone.”

“Hmm. Nah, I’m cool with a non-adult convo if it means we do this now. Ballpark the end of this will-they, won’t-they dance. Are you waiting until you know me better ’cause I can do Hot Tub Twenty Questions all day, every day if it speeds things along?”

“You are unbelievable.”

“Close, but the proper adjective is horny.” I slung an arm around her shoulder, drinking her in. Under the grime was the faint scent of peach shampoo. It wasn’t fair. Everything about Kenzie made you want to eat her up. “I want you. You want me. We’re both single adults. Let’s make Shonda, Fuller, and the ladies uncomfortable tonight and have screaming, hot sex that echoes through three floors.”

Kenzie’s mouth opened and closed, eyes huge. It was clear no guy had ever been this direct with her before. If anyone lived the life is short, live it fully motto, it was me—even before the grim reaper swooped down, measured me for a coffin, and tagged me to pick up later.

Why drag your feet on the things you want? If it’s that fucking good, chances are someone else will snatch it up while you’re plucking up the courage.

Sienna snapped her fingers. “Sunny, you should buy her lilies. They’re her favorite.”

“Filing that away.”

“I told you not to help!”

Her sister skipped off, giggling a laugh that sounded sweet and dreamy to the world, but I now knew was laced with mischief.

Kenzie sucked in an audible breath and let it go. “Look, I’m just not ready for a relationship right now—casual or otherwise. That whole thing with Luca... really shook me. I don’t know if I can trust my judgment, and that sounds like it’s about you, but it’s not. If I can’t trust myself, I’ll never fully trust any guy I’m with. No matter how sweet, patient, and loving he is. We both deserve more,” she said, curling around my fingers. “Do you understand?”

“You want to wait until you’re ready. Till you feel safe. I completely understand.”

She relaxed. “Thank you.”

“If I may, I’d like to throw in evidence in my favor for why when that day comes, I’m the sweet, patient, loving guy you should make a go with.”

“Okay. What—?”

I looped around her waist, swinging Kenzie around and catching her leg. She cried out as I dipped her right there on the street, losing my fingers in her sweet-smelling waves. She parted her lips to berate me, and I swallowed the shout—sealing her lips to mine.

The first time I kissed her was a spontaneous indulgence. She was there, I was there, and I wanted to kiss her, so I did.

The second time was a message—pouring everything I felt about her into a single moment in time, before she slapped me. All that I thought she was—beautiful, witty, sexy. All that I wanted us to be—together, trusting, sharing matching rug burns from the carpet sex. I sent it all to my angel as I gained entrance, tangling her tongue with mine.

Kenzie’s soft moan did cruel things to my erection. She cupped my cheek, gently pulling me closer as she deepened the kiss. Felt like ages, but was more likely minutes, that I put her back on her feet.

Kenzie blinked up at me, chest heaving. I kissed her nose. “You can take all the time you need, but fair warning, my kisses are poison.” She touched her mouth. “That’s your second dose. Both combined will eat through your logic, erode your roadblocks, and make it so all you can think about night and day is Sunny, Sunny...” I nipped her bottom lip. “Sunny,” I whispered.
