“NO! NO! I ain’t done right all the time, Caspian, but I would never lay a hand on your mama!”

“You wouldn’t lay a hand on her?” Caspian aimed the pistol at Uncle Bobby’s hand and shot.

“AHHHHHHHHH!!! YOU FUCKIN’ BASTARD! YOU CRAZY ASS, DEMENTED BASTARD!!!”

“You laid a hand on ’er all right. You raped my mama while she was passed out drunk, and she ended up pregnant! She ain’t say shit to you about it. Instead, she took care of me like I was a blessing! She raised me like I was from a king and queen! She could’ve aborted me, and nobody with half a brain would have blamed her if they knew how I was conceived—but she didn’t. She never wanted me or anyone else to know because she ain’t want me to suffer! Be teased! She wanted me to be safe. Be loved. Have a family! To live my life in peace, never knowin’ how I came into the world. She wrote it in her diary.” He picked up the diary and shook it. “It wasn’t to protect the likes of you! It was to protect ME! Her child! And she loved me with her whole heart and soul!”

Tears streamed down his cheeks. “It all makes sense now… the strange way you’d look at me over the years! You didn’t like me but you were still protective over me… it was the oddest thing! I could tell you loved me in some sick, twisted way. After all, I was your only biological child. My mother, a woman you’d become obsessed with! You knew what the rest of us didn’t. You didn’t want nothin’ to happen to me ’cause I was yours, and you knew it. Still, you resented me, too. The only sick ass crazy demented bastard in this barn is YOU!”

“…I didn’t do it, Caspian! I promise ya! I loved your mama! I really did! We made love. It wasn’t rape!”

“YOU LYIN’ PIECE OF SHIT! She wrote it down! She never showed anyone this diary! She’d have no reason to make this up and the DNA matches! Everyone knew she didn’t want you, and you had a terrible crush on her. You were used to getting the girls you wanted, but she ain’t want the likes of you! TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT SHE DIED!”

“I DON’T KNOW!”

He marched up to Bobby and pressed the barrel of the gun against his temple.

“This is your last chance, or I’m going to blow your brains out. I know what happened, but I want to hear you say it…”

“…Okay! … Okay…” Uncle Bobby sobbed. “Me and Angel got into it. She kicked me out the house. I had been drinking and smokin’. I got to thinking about things and wasn’t thinking clearly, Caspian… so… so I drove over to your mama’s house. I came in and… I wasn’t thinkin’ right, and tried to kiss her. She told me she didn’t want to do that. I told ’er I didn’t have no place to go for the night and wanted to sleep there. She said no. I asked her for some water before I left to get a motel room, and she fixed me a glass. I saw you in your room playin’. Your back was towards me. I turned to her and tried to kiss her again—”

“You tried to fuck her. AGAIN. She ain’t want you. AGAIN. You were rejected. AGAIN. Only this time, Mama wasn’t drunk and high. She fought back! She fought hard! She was stronger than you thought she was, and gave you a run for your money. I imagine she even said, ‘You ain’t going to do this to me again!’ I heard stuff fallin’ and breakin’. “I heard you scream when she dug her nails into you, and I heard her cryin’!”

“It wasn’t like that, Caspian! YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG!”

“No, motherfucker, I finally got it all RIGHT! She was making things too hard for you, and she said she was going to call Angel and tell her what you’d done. You were angry and frustrated. So what did you do? You strangled the shit outta her! WHY?!!!” He took the pistol and smacked Uncle Bobby across the head with it, over and over. Blood trickled from his brow.

“…I panicked, Caspian! I’M SO SORRY! It was a terrible mistake! I never meant to kill her! I never meant to do it! I loved Cheyenne! She was supposed to be mine!”

“You sat there, thinking: How in the hell am I going to hide this crime? And then it came to you…” He snapped his fingers. “Hang her. That’ll look like suicide. You knew it would be easy ’cause Mama suffered from depression. Not ’cause she was crazy, but because she’d been raped years ago by you, and she had guilt about getting drunk that night… figured she’d brought it on herself, and then she had to turn around and watch her sister marry the rapist! That depression was the perfect alibi for a suicide. And that’s what you did, only she was already dead by the time you got her up there on those rafters. Shame of it all, you knew I was still in the house… and you knew I was your son… AND YOU LEFT ME IN THAT GOTDAMN HOUSE WITH MY DEAD MAMA HANGIN’ FROM THE CEILING, FOR DAYS!!!” Tears covered his face in thick rivulets running down… He aimed the pistol at Uncle Bobby, breathing so hard he could barely keep up.
