I suppose there is a difference between innocent lives and guilty ones. The people the club take out are the worst of the worst, they’re the kind to pluck kids off the street and sell them for money. In my opinion, they don’t deserve to breathe another breath of air on this earth.

“Trust me, I don’t care what he’s doing, I just care that he’s gettin’ careless about it. Saw a news article only two days ago about a body bein’ left in an alley. He’s messy, and messy will get him locked up.”

He’s right about that.

Spike knows better than to do sloppy work.

“I’ll talk to him,” I assure him.

“Appreciate it,” he murmurs. “How are you feelin’ about goin’ tomorrow?”

My stomach twists with nerves. “I’m actually terrified. I know it’s only two days a week, but the more I think about it, the more I’m scared to leave my babies. Mercy is six months now, and Spike is the best dad, but I’m still wracked with guilt. What if I miss something important?”

Cade grins. “You’re a worrier, but I assure you, those kids will be fine. It’s two days, and it’s just as important for them to see their mom doin’ something for herself, somethin’ she loves. Don’t feel guilt about that.”

He’s right, I know he’s right, but it doesn’t take away the fact that I feel like I’m failing them by not being there every second of their lives.

“What if I don’t fit in with all the other people there? I mean, some of them are younger than me, and they’re cooler and ...”

Cade chuckles, cutting me off. “Tom Cat, you’re goin’ to be just fine. You’ll be partyin’ with the best of them in no time.”

I giggle.

“Spike, on the other hand, is goin’ to hate havin’ you away. He won’t admit it, but the idea of not bein’ able to see you every second of the day is goin’ to piss him right off.”

I laugh. “He’ll get through. It’ll do him good. He might miss me enough to stop treating me like a delicate doll.”

“You’re his entire world—he’s got to handle you with care.”

I snort. “Well, occasionally, I’d like to be thrown against a wall and broken.”

Cade shakes his head, a sly grin on his face. “On that note ...”

“Aw come on,” I say, laughing as he turns and walks out. “We’re friends. We talk about these things!”

“Are you tormenting my man again?”

Turning, I see Addison walking in with Mercy on her hip. She just changed her for me, and judging by the look on her face, it was bad.

“He doesn’t want to listen to my sex talk. Rude. How did you go with Mercy?”

Addison scowls at me. “I don’t know what you feed this child, but I am officially off duty as her god mother. No way am I ever experiencing what I just did. It was up her back. Her back. Do you have any idea what that was like? I’m traumatized.”

I laugh, reaching out for my baby.

“She does some good ones. Got that from her dad, I think.”

Addison scrunches her lips. “I think she needs to be dairy free or something, because girlll ...”

I laugh. “I’ll take your suggestion into consideration.”

Rolling her eyes, Addi grins. “Are you all packed for tomorrow?”

“I think so. Ugh, I’m so nervous. I’m not sure I’m ready for this.”

Reaching out, Addison puts her hands on my shoulders. “You were born ready for this. Go have some fun, live a little. I’m jealous, but rest assured, if there is a frat party, I’m there.”

Shaking my head, I can’t help but smile. “I think we’re a bit old for that now.”

Eyes widening, Addison gasps. “Excuse me, I’m not even twenty-five. How dare you say such a thing.”

“Some of those kids are like eighteen. We’re old in comparison.”

Putting her hands over her ears, Addison clicks her tongue. “La la la, I’m not listening.”

“Well, some of us still act like we’re eighteen ...” I tease.

Dropping her hands, she grins and flicks her hair. “Better.”

“Seriously, though, I’m so nervous.”

She tips her head to the side thoughtfully. “Trust me, honey, you’re going to be just fine and so are the kids. Spike might sulk, but he’s going to get through. Just think about the amazing sex you’ll have when you get back.”

I grin. “Oh, I’m already imagining it.”

“No more babies, though, because that girl is enough to keep us on our toes forever.”

Mercy babbles and smiles at that exact moment.

“I think she is going to keep us alive, that’s for sure,” I say, pressing a kiss to her chubby, soft cheek.

“I can’t believe we’re mothers now. Remember when we were just tormenting this poor club with our presence?”

I laugh. “Oh, those were the good old days.”

Addison laughs, then steps forward and hugs me.

“Go give them hell, honey.”
