True to my word, I fuck my wife rough and fast, and we both find that orgasmic high together.

God, it’s good to be home again.

Later, after we get cleaned up and Ella’s in one of my t-shirts and plain cotton panties—which are just as sexy to me—we lay spooned in bed with the lights out.

“Today was a good day,” I remark.

“A happy day for the books,” she replies softly.

Happiness—something I won’t ever take for granted again.

“I thought when you first told me you loved me it was the happiest moment in my life,” I say in the dark.

That stirs her, causing her to flip so she can face me, even though it’s too dim to see each other’s faces clearly. Instead, her fingers come to my cheeks, and she presses her palms against them.

“Then,” I continue. “When we found out you were pregnant, that was the happiest day of my life.”

“Jim,” she murmurs, emotion thick in that one word.

“When you said “I do” at our wedding, again… that was the happiest moment. And when Lucy was born, that took over as my happiest moment.”

“They were my happiest moments, too,” she whispers, touching her lips softly to mine.

“Notice anything missing?” I ask, but I don’t wait for her to respond. “None of my ‘happiest’ moments had a damn thing to do with hockey.”

“Not even winning the Cup?” she asks in awe.

And while that was a momentous occasion, I would give it up in a moment to experience the level of happiness any one of those other occasions gave me. “Not even the Cup,” I assure her.

I pull her in closer, tucking her head into my neck.

“But this moment right here, sweet Ella,” I say softly with a press of my lips to the top of her head. “It’s the happiest yet.”

She sighs, cuddles in tighter, and murmurs sleepily, “I love you so much, Jim.”

I’m smiling as I fall asleep.
